In the Navy we practice "two man integrity" when transporting small arms. Always. Two guys, in theory, keep each other honest and make sure the weapons are properly transported from the armory to the site where they are needed and back again.

Does the Air Force not do the same?

"Beers was responsible for making sure the security forces group was trained, organized and equipped to secure 150 Minuteman III nuclear missiles and launch facilities, and 15 missile alert facilities across 8,500 square miles."

lost a box of MK 19 grenades out of the back of a moving vehicle

Uhh, right. And did they spend two weeks in the field marching every possible inch of terrain looking for the "lost" box.

The worst possible place would be the local mosque.

Minot officials announced on Wednesday that the machine gun had been recovered by Air Force Office of Special Investigation agents after obtaining a federal search warrant for the unnamed airman’s residence on June 19.

Why is the airman "unnamed" ?

Security forces chief Col. Jason Beers was fired on May 23 “due to a loss of trust and confidence after a series of events under the scope of his leadership, including a recent loss of ammunition and weapons,” a 5th Bomb Wing news release said at the time. Beers landed a new job at Air Force Special Operations Command just a few weeks later.

So does this mean in Our AF one can fail miserabley in a Command Rank and get canned but still land a job at another division ?

Theft is theft. It doesn’t matter if its medical supplies, food, equipment or weaponry this airman is going to be stripped to E-1, given a dishonorable discharge and sent to Leavenworth because of the seriousness of the charge. There are thieves in every branch of the service and there should be consequences for their actions. We will know the name of the airman soon I believe as it will not be kept secret.

Interesting. This is the same bomb wing that in 2007 was involved in the unauthorized transport of 6 cruise missiles with live W80 nuclear warheads to Barksdale AFB. The nukes were known to be out the chain of operational control for 36 hours before being discovered at Barksdale. That base seems to have a spotty record re: weapons handling.
