Millennials haven't forgotten Mao, Stalin, or Lenin. They never knew them.

Millenials are aged 25 – 39. In Australia four out of five are not even “familiar” with Mao. Half have never heard of him, even though he caused the deaths of twice as many people as Adolf Hitler.

Political ideologues control our education system. We teach kids identity politics, and how to control the weather with light globes, but not the most important political lesson of the 20th Century.

We won the cold war, then lost the peace.

Why Millenials are embracing Socialism Tom Switzer, Sydney Morning Herald

The survey evidence is clear. In a YouGov poll commissioned by the Centre for Independent Studies last year, 58 per cent of Australian millennials have a favourable view of socialism, with only 18 per cent having an unfavourable one. These findings reflect Millennial attitudes in Britain and the US.

What’s going on?

Part of the problem is plain ignorance. Most Millennials were hardly alive when Ronald Reagan called the Soviet Union an “evil empire”.

According to the CIS poll, only 26 per cent of Millennials are familiar with Vladimir Lenin and 34 per cent with Joseph Stalin. Only 21 per cent of those questioned said they knew well who Mao was. Never mind that these men were responsible for the deaths of tens of millions and the impoverishment of hundreds of millions.

Whatever excuse explains Millennials’ ignorance of communism, they should at least know about Venezuela where the socialist regime of the past two decades has led to repression, an economy in free fall, widespread disease and starvation and mass emigration.

We won the cold war, then lost the peace.

First in Russia (when Yeltsin handed Russia back to the KGB), then in the US, when the Clinton-Bush family handed the US to Mexico.

This is why I made it a point to show Doctor Zhivago to all the students I taught. That film points very graphically to the arrogant and humorless posture of ideological tyrants toward the individual. It also shows the almost immediate devastation of life, liberty, property and the pursuit of happiness once the bastards take over.

The other annoying narrative getting in the way is that fascism is ‘right wing’ as embodied by Adolf Hitler, and that he was beaten out primarily by Soviet communists, who were left wing.

This running narrative has the explicit intention of diminishing the U.S. war effort. It gives Stalin the primary credit for winning WWII and makes him out to be less bad than Hitler. (Even though Stalin and Hitler were equally responsible for dragging the globe into the brutal war in the first place! Not to mention the massive consequences of the Russian Revolution even earlier.)

How can people be so naive about human behavior?

Show me one Communist/socialist leader who gave up the palace and limousines to spend the rest of his days pulling turnips at Turnip Commune #34?

The communists/socialists are just dirty liars trying to get other people to die for them so that they can live in the palace and ride in the limousines.

They should but they don't. The difficulty with education at the moment is an over-dependence on narrative because narratives can be mastered very quickly and applied to everything (this is the foundation of that hilariously misnamed neo-Marxist approach to Critical Thinking). If it's outside the narrative, it simply doesn't exist.

That's only a problem if there are consequences, which, in the case of the starvation, privation, and poverty in Venezuela took a while to develop. And it turns out to be a lot easier to alter the narrative than to cure the consequences. Even now there are academic and media figures insisting stubbornly that the only problem in Venezuela was the fall in oil prices. This despite the fact that the other oil-producing countries appear to have weathered that just fine. It's their story and they're sticking to it.

And that's the attraction of socialism - it's a narrative that is easy to understand and saves the student the obligation of studying economics in the real world, or, as this article implies, its history as well.

The further and equally frightening fact is they don’t know about Churchill, Thatcher, Golda Mier, Sadat, the US founding fathers, etc.

In short, there is very little over which they have what you could call a ‘command’ of the historical record.

How do you move into your future and plan for yourself and others who matter to you, if you possess no pivotal, core facts, or functional frame of reference...if you recognize no proved and time-abiding truths?

Growing up, I recall politicians in our WH with whom I could not agree... but, their statements and plans demonstrated their knowledge of commonly held information as documented in fact. They reached conclusions different from mine, but were NOT just pulling s*&^ out of their a*&es for shock effect and to win over uninformed, selfish, shallow and completely disaffected losers

Zhavago was my mom’s favorite movie. The music alone makes it worth watching.

There is an SCETV underwriter, the Columbia Art Museum, that has a quick montage of exhibits.

It ends on a bunch of portraits of Mao.

Thanks for saying so. Your mom and I could have had some great conversations, as I know the 3:17 film by heart.

It was a good film. But, it’s one of the few that I wish I had not seen until after reading the book.

After reading the book, I felt like the film ruined it for me

Tell them that Reds in good standing in the SDS movement and Hollywood and Black Panthers and Yippies et al used to carry and quote Mao’s Little Red Book including calls for children to rise up and kill their parents who cling to the past.

This is nothing new.

In america, the public school I went to 40 years ago barely touched the subject of the communist mass murderers (when in reality THEIR murders and terror and tyranny made the more mentioned Hitler look like a amateur by comparison).

The leftists have done their work and the generations who know the truth are slowly dying off.

I would add these lying/fraudulent/apparatchik leftist ‘academics’ to the list of people who will be held accountable for whats going to happen in the future and what reaction it will bring.

Public schooling needs to end. Better that people stare their ignorance in the face than walk around with their heads full of garbage they believe to be true.
