10 Months After Massive Stroke, 22-Year-Old Finishes First Half Marathon
Runner's World ^ | November 19, 2019 | Hailey Middlebrook

Before her life changed last year, Lauren Ziegler hated running. The Grand Valley State University student, now 22, grew up playing team sports in high school, then joined a CrossFit club in college as a way to stay fit as an undergrad.

“I started competing in CrossFit competitions in college,” Ziegler told Runner’s World. “I loved every part of my CrossFit workouts except for the running. It was my least favorite thing in the world. The most I would ever run was two or three miles a week.”

One morning before class in December 2018, Ziegler woke up to find that she couldn’t walk across her bedroom. “I couldn’t move the left side of my body,” she said. “I would try to walk, but I couldn’t stand up straight. I was falling all over the place.”

Ziegler called her sister, Audrie, who found Ziegler lying paralyzed on her bed, unable to talk or move. Audrie brought her sister immediately to the Spectum Health Butterworth Hospital, where the doctors informed Ziegler that she had suffered a massive stroke.

While the doctors didn’t know exactly what caused the stroke, they suggested it might have been brought on by birth control pills, which can slightly increase women’s risk of stroke, Ziegler said.

Strokes are predominantly thought of as a condition affecting older people, but research shows that their rates in younger people are rising: According to a 2016 study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, hospitalizations for stroke in people ages 15 to 30 jumped by 40 percent from 1994 to 2012 (the latest year data was available). Birth control pills my butt

I doubt she was a smoker and then that correlation however slight is after many years

My guess is an anomaly in cerebral artery pathway

Poor thing, I’m glad she’s ok

How frightening! I had the misfortune to have a Hemiplegic Migraine, progressively (over about 5 seconds, moving from my face down my body) paralyzed on one side and rendered unconscious for 10 minutes. When I awoke I was still paralyzed but starting to get feeling back on my left side. I went to the hospital and had a complete workup. No stroke. I hope it never happens again, but they said it could. Prayers that this young woman stays healthy for a long time.

When I had a spontaneous carotid artery dissection at age 50, they did a bunch of tests at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix. An incidental finding was that I had an arterioventricular malformation (AVM) in my brain. Apparently autopsies have shown that about 5% of ppl have an AVM and don’t know it because they’re asymptomatic. Good to know, I guess, but not much I can do about it. If I was symptomatic I would get it clipped off, but since the procedure can go awry, I could end up with brain damage. Of course, then I’d be a liberal, so...no thanks. 🤣

Wow, that sounds scary! I hope you never get another one too. I’ve had a total of 6 migraines in my life which I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. The last one was 15 years ago, but lately I’ve been getting ocular migraines without a headache every few months. As long as I don’t get the migraine, I’m cool.

wardaddy - my mom’s best friend was in the early trials for the Birth Control pill.

She had 5 children and didn’t want more. She died at only 34 years of age - from a blot clot to her lungs. She was misdiagnosed, as the docs thought at first it was pleurisy.

I had to take care of her two little boys and distract them the day she died. They were 3 and 5. I was 18 at the time and had orders not to tell them. I was only 18, in shock, and devastated.

Birth control pills have some devastating side effects

For the freedom to fornicate and without natural normal God-given results is sacrosanct, as is the freedom to murder infant as long as it is not a millimeter outside the womb.

Well, I am glad you are looking out for God, here on earth.

You do realize that some of those pills are used for genuine medical processes?

Anyway, I am sure you and I are done “multiplying.” So why don’t we leave God’s judgement to God. We can judge dog shows or something.

I didn’t say they couldn’t have devastating effects.

I said i doubted she had a stroke at 22 from them and I assume she was a non smoker

Despite your moms pal birth control is used worldwide with very few outcomes like your moms friend

I would point out much like LSD...in the early days docs and pharma thought more was better in birth control

Nowadays birth control pills are much weaker like Yasmin

My wife didn’t like the bloating so eschewed them and she smoked then

We have five kids and woulda 20 if we had married at 1880s rural average in the south...say her 16 and me 19 instead of 32 and 40 respectively

However her bestie since first grade died three years ago at 50 from a cardiac event we assume whether ischemia or arrhythmia we don’t know...she’d complained of stomach and back pain and indigestion

And had high blood pressure

Her and her husband since college didn’t want kids so she too birth control and smoked and drank to effect nightly

She had mild agoraphobia ...boxed wine to leave the house

I shan’t speak I’ll of her she defended me to wifey when wifey was on a tear bitching about me.for some usual male offense

We used to worry the combo of the above was problematic

I think 30 years of birth control and smoking did her in early unfortunately

The morning we heard my rib was running across the pasture behind the house as I was feeding the horses

Low to the ground squalling hysterically

My congenital bad heart flipped a few times my worst fear one of our children was killed...she collapsed in my arms squalling about her pals demise...we just sat there with horses around us discombobulated for an hour as she sobbed

It was a bad time.

I recall being at an airport with my mom when my dad got the call from the FBO that my grandpa had died ...she knew from the look on dads face...she just screamed “daddy..oh no....please say that’s not it.....and sobbed just like my wife did for a very long time”

Hard stuff and we almost all go thru it at some point....sudden severe loss

Smart choice

I get echocardiogram annually now and they always do the carotids too

Of course you can have fairly clear carotid and a big clot come through and zap...

Peace to you, wardaddy. I meant no offense.

We take modern drugs to achieve a specific goal we desire, but some of us end up as unfortunate outlier statistics when these don’t work according to the promising clinical trials.

Not interested in arguing, so let’s drop it.

Sudden severe loss......

My MIL died at 64 of a brain aneurysm. She was the healthiest of my young son’s grandparents. Such a shock.

My younger brother had a heart attack and was in the hospital for a week. He stayed with us the next week. He had a stroke in our home and passed in a few seconds. I NEVER thought he was going to die. I will never get over it.

Sudden severe loss is unspeakable.

For the freedom to fornicate and without natural normal God-given results is sacrosanct, as is the freedom to murder infant as long as it is not a millimeter outside the womb.

Well, I am glad you are looking out for God, here on earth.

And likewise we can be glad you are looking out for those who dare post God’s judgment on an issue when you disagree with them on this pro-God, pro-Bible forum.

You do realize that some of those pills are used for genuine medical processes?

Sure, but as only 14% of pill users take it only for other reasons than contraceptives, presuming this women was one of those is what is most presumptuous, vs. being normative.

Anyway, I am sure you and I are done “multiplying.” So why don’t we leave God’s judgement to God. We can judge dog shows or something.

Meaning you cannot leave those who post God’s judgment on issues alone when you disagree with them.

Or do you not contend for the freedom to fornicate and avoid the natural normal God-given results, and the freedom to murder infants as long as they are not even a millimeter outside the womb?

No, I chose not to walk around and point out what YOU think is wrong without any idea of what you are talking about.

What happened to love your neighbor. Your words are toxic, hiding behind your religion. This is not a biblical forum. It is a conservative forum.

Anyway, you make assumptions about people you know nothing about. I put that kind of intrusive fanaticism on par with Islam. Believe what you want. Leave the rest of us alone.

No, I chose not to walk around and point out what YOU think is wrong without any idea of what you are talking about.

Meaning the you do not think the God of the Bible knows what HE is talking about regarding teaching contrary to freedom to fornicate and avoiding the natural normal God-given results, and the freedom to murder infants as long as they are not even a millimeter outside the womb.

Of-course, when you think that looking to the Bible is akin to the absurdity of the Islamist using a 1,200 year old book to run their lives, then such opposition is par for the course.

What happened to love your neighbor. Your words are toxic, hiding behind your religion. Like a liberal, faced with reproof of your disapproval of your liberal morality, your emotional recourse if that of charging the reprover with hate, and as being contrary to the faith.

This is not a biblical forum. It is a conservative forum.

I see, you mean when the owner says this is a pro-God forum, then he means just any God, of any book, and not specifically the Bible? Want to see? It is you who is out of place here.

My next door neighbor would run six miles a day. One day he didn't come back. Had a massive coronary and died at 56 years.

I know this experience is anecdotal but I also have a number of friends in their late 60s, early 70s who loved to run in their earlier years who now are having knee and hip replacements. Exercise is important but one has to temper it with the stress and strain on the body. Like anything, excess is not a good thing.
