The surprising reason why China is blocking South Korean music videos and TV

(Article from 2017)

China is not happy about Washington’s agreement with Seoul to build a missile shield system, known as THAAD, in South Korea to protect the close US ally from North Korean attacks.

Other than issuing angry statements, though, China actually can’t do much to stop the installation of the THAAD system, which began Tuesday. It’s taking out its anger on Korean pop culture instead.

Korean TV shows and K-pop music videos have been blocked from streaming in China — one of their biggest and most lucrative markets — Chinese internet users have posted about boycotting Korean beauty products, and Korean celebrities have canceled tours in China.

It may not involve guns or military attacks, but the fierce Chinese counterattack is a pushback against foreign influence, and an attempt to further solidify Beijing’s dominance in the region.

South Korean culture is a big deal among Chinese young people — fashion, cosmetics, music, food, TV shows, even the language define what’s cool in the world’s most populous country. In Beijing and cities around China, it’s easy to find Korean barbecue restaurants blasting K-pop and displaying posters of attractive celebrities.

In 2016, the Korean romantic drama Uncontrollably Fond had more than 4.1 billion views on China’s version of YouTube, Youku...

The popularity of another drama, Descendants of the Sun, prompted the Chinese Ministry of Public Security to warn Chinese citizens against watching too many episodes.

“Watching Korean dramas could be dangerous, and may even lead to legal troubles,” the ministry ominously posted on its social media page.

The Chinese see South Korean entertainment as being obscene, immoral and dangerous to family structure.

“...Chinese Ministry of Public Security to warn Chinese citizens against watching too many episodes. “

Ok. How many is too many? That way I can watch until I’m one episode below the limit on one account, then switch to another account.

The K-pop music scene maybe and some of the action films maybe...but otherwise. No. There's such a lvoely innocence to K-dramas and other films.

And nothing is as nearly obscene as the Chinese (and North Korean) governments' day to day conduct. Just saying.

What they mean by “obscene and immoral” is Korean cinema’s relentless depiction of government and company officials as deceitful and power hungry. Hits too close to home for the CCP.

Last year the Chinese passed laws requiring proof of identity to get a cellphone account and email accounts.

It was funny to see the reactions at a university, after American men called Chinese women “sexy,” flirted with them or asked them for an American style date. ;D

And what the Chinese government announced before the Beijing Women’s Conference. LOL! The announcement said that Chinese people should stay indoors, because western feminists would be running naked in the streets.

Vox is merely speculating.

It is not easy to determine the policy/motives of the ChiComs, especially on something such as this.

That’s why Samsung and LG all but pulled manufacturing from Communist China. The Communists attacking Lotte Department Store in China didn’t help, nor did the Chinese-caused (sabotaged) battery problem in the Note 7.

I liked Zhang Yimou movies (starring Gong Li) before he eventually started catering to the very State that censored or banned his best work:

“Raise the Red Lantern”
“To Live”

I’m sure the current govt crushes most of China’s true creative potential.
