Russian army to send help to Italy after Putin's phone call Reuters

Published 3:17 am Modified 3:23 am 8 A+ A- CORONAVIRUS | The Russian military will start sending medical help to Italy from Sunday in order to help it battle the new coronavirus after receiving an order from President Vladimir Putin, Russia’s Defense Ministry said in a statement.

Putin spoke to Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte on Saturday, the Kremlin said, saying the Russian leader had offered his support and help in the form of mobile disinfection vehicles and specialists to help the worst-hit Italian regions.

Italy recorded a jump in deaths from coronavirus of almost 800 on Saturday, taking the toll in the world’s hardest-hit country to almost 5,000.

I wonder what’s going on with that malaria drug over there.

Wonder if they have started to use it in a big way.

It’s a brilliant move, PR or not. You have to hand it to Pukey on this one.

Italy is being destroyed with the ChiCom Virus and the EU showed what it’s worth.

ZERO.

Malaria drug -- Chloroquine -- is only a part of a solution. Another part is two Chinese army planes already on the ground.

Today the number of coronovirus deaths in Italy is 793. This is serious.

And yes, there is a benefit to Putin in this. Besides the obvious things, this is a fantastic opportunity to train the corps -- in case the situation deteriorates in Russia.

It is a huge opportunity missed by Trump too.

Italy should quit the EU and join the Russian Union over this.

Ok, let’s not get crazy. Italy should however form a new UK - Euro trade alliance.

F the EU.

Yes, the Italians were begging for EU help before calling Putin.

Maybe they will yet ask: just what is EU for ?

The Russian covid-19 test is 1/16 as sensitive. Let’s hope these soldiers won’t touch off a fresh wave of infections in Italy. It’s the last thing they need right now.

[But the Russian medical news site PCR News this week said it had acquired a copy of the test’s make-up.

According to PCR News, the Russian test is based on the same method used by other countries.

But the Russian test, PCR News wrote, only detects the virus when there are over 100,000 copies of it per milliliter in a sample. That is far more than in other countries’ tests. A test in use in the U.S., for example, will pick up the virus with just 6,250 copies.

“That would mean it’s about 10-16 times less sensitive than what’s available in the U.S.,” Carmen Wiley, president of the American Association of Clinical Chemistry, told ABC News by a phone. At such a level, she said there was a risk the Russians were missing cases, in particular where people were asymptomatic. ]

‘Not a single EU country’ responded to Italian plea for help with coronavirus
by Tim Pearce | March 11, 2020

A top Italian official knocked the European Union for leaving Italy’s plea for medical assistance unanswered while the coronavirus outbreak cripples the country.

Italy’s permanent representative to the EU, Maurizio Massari, wrote an op-ed in Politico on Tuesday asking for aid from EU members. The Italian official said that while the EU has ignored Italy’s requests for aid, China has begun assisting Italy bilaterally.

“Italy, the European country struck hardest by the coronavirus, has done everything it can to contain and manage the epidemic,” Massari wrote. “We must ensure, under EU coordination, the supply of the necessary medical equipment and its redistribution among those countries and regions most in need. Today, this means Italy; tomorrow, the need could be elsewhere.”

“Italy has already asked to activate the European Union Mechanism of Civil Protection for the supply of medical equipment for individual protection,” Massari added. “But, unfortunately, not a single EU country responded to the Commission’s call. Only China responded bilaterally. Certainly, this is not a good sign of European solidarity.”

Italian doctors are scrambling to make room for an influx of thousands of coronavirus patients. The country has over 12,000 confirmed cases of the virus, with most of those concentrated in the northern region of Lombardy. Italy had reported over 800 deaths from the coronavirus by Wednesday afternoon, the most of any country other than China, where the disease originated.

Sure, but at this point why would the question matter?

Italy is too busy stacking corpses in churches and in their homes awaiting pickup to be cremated.

Their mourning is denied even a basic funeral. I mourn with them. When I saw the numbers kept climbing and deaths nearing 800 yesterday, I was very sad.
