New study casts doubt on hyrdoxychloroquine’s effectiveness in treating coronavirus vs. standard existing best practice for conventional care

In a prime example of why President Trump shouldn’t be endorsing any unproven potential treatments for the novel coronavirus behind the current global pandemic, a new small-scale study by researchers in China indicates that the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine actually isn’t any more effective than standard, existing best practice for conventional care of patients with the virus.

The study, which included 30 patients with a control of 15 who received no treatment, with the other half being treated with hydroxychloroquine, showed that there was a statistically insignificant difference in the number of patients who tested negative for the drug after a week. During the study, those who received conventional treatment were provided anti-virals that are currently recommended for use in China, including Iopinavir and ritonavir, and after a week, 13 of the 15 control patients showed no sign of the virus, while 14 of the 15 who were treated with hydroxychloroquine showed the same.

An earlier small-scale study of 30 patients by French researchers published last week had shown indication that hydroxychloroquine used alone was effective in reducing the duration and severity of COVID-19, while using it in combination with an antibiotic called azithromycin increased its effectiveness. The study has been criticized by some for its methods – which is the entire purpose of scientific study and medical research, wherein people submit their studies for peer review prior to publication, and then other researchers challenge their assumptions, results and findings.

Trump is obviously not a scientist or medical professional, and yet he has been touting the efficacy of hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine during the White House’s daily coronavirus task force press briefings, and on Twitter, including when he called for them to be “put in use IMMEDIATELY” on March 21.

I’ll wait to see what our researchers say before passing judgment...

Well, if Tech Crunch says it it must be so.

“The study has been criticized by some for its methods – which is the entire purpose of scientific study and medical research, wherein people submit their studies for peer review prior to publication, and then other researchers challenge their assumptions, results and findings.”

Right. Keep up with the bureaucratic ways, and in six or seven years we might formally decide the treatment is safe.

Trump, OTOH, says go with it now, it MIGHT work, and save your life.

I’ll go with Trump.

Let me fix that last line:

Trump Darrel is obviously not a scientist or medical professional, and yet he has been touting written an article doubting the efficacy of hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine.

... a new small-scale study by researchers in China...

I guess that settles it.

Garbage test. There is no control group with no treatment.

All this test may prove is that the other methods are almost as good as the test medicine.

the OHCQ group has radiologic progression in a third
vs. almost half of the “control” group.

the OHCQ was probably sicker at the start,
and Zpack was not even given.

We Trust Pres. Trump far more than the Red Chinese.

But he touted a drug combo. The study is false.

I have never hated our media more than now. And I thought that wasn’t possible.

They are rooting for this virus because Trump is battling it.

Open by Easter? Not ever!!! The media will argue the dangers of this virus for six more months. Luckily, we are reaching a breaking point where the people of this country are getting rapidly tired of being controlled.

Tech Crunch made this conclusion by citing a small case Chinese study.

Yet, we have another Chinese study that showed a DIFFERENT RESULT.

Breakthrough: Chloroquine phosphate has shown apparent
efficacy in treatment of COVID-19 associated pneumonia in
clinical studies

Which one to believe?

It needs zinc to work.
So they are going to continue to report “mixed” results and failure.

And if it’s no better doesn’t that mean it’s just as good?

Back in the 70’s, a friend of my wife’s parents had invented an amazing burn medication. He was getting amazing results in testing. However, it was formally tested by some government agency and they determined it was ineffective.

Howver, part of the instructions for using it was that it was imperative that the bandages be loose to allow oxygen into the area, but they wrapped the banages tightly.

Meanwhile, we had a couple of sample bottles and had to use it a few times. It was amazing.

Of course, that’s just anecdotal. :)

The ole Chinese study, eh??

Well, they’ve been so forthcoming and helpful throughout all of this I can see why we should put our trust...

OK, I can’t go on.

And here’s another China study (this one cited by the CDC website):

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/hcp/therapeutic-options.html

(EXCERPT)

A study in China reported that chloroquine treatment of COVID-19 patients had clinical and virologic benefit versus a comparison group, and chloroquine was added as a recommended antiviral for treatment of COVID-19 in China

So, a Chinese study vs another Chinese study... which Chinese study to believe?

This article would never have been written if a Dem was president (shudder the thought). The media only writes what advances the Left’s agenda.

Trial underway in NYC, which began yesterday. We should have some idea as to the drug’s effectiveness in a few days. India has put a ban on the export of the drug. They must believe it has some promise. Germany and France are using it on patients.

Agreed. I wouldn’t put it past the CCP to put out a false study just to cause even more damage.
