MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCBD) – To protect and serve… even when it comes to little ducklings.

Officers with the Mount Pleasant Police Department on Tuesday rescued a couple of baby ducks who were trapped in a drain and shared photos and a video on the department’s Facebook page.

Animal Control Officer Hoffman and Officer Sanford went to work and rescued the sweet ducks and reunited them with their mom.

A couple of the ducklings looked like they weren’t hers.

That’s kind of interesting; I’ve never raised ducks, so I don’t know. But I think it often happens that something unfortunate takes place with a mother duck, and another bird will accept to ‘foster’

Amateurs should NOT try this with Canadian Goose goslings. Despite your good intentions the momma goose will not like it and you just might get “goosed” and not in a good way.

A Canada Goose can break your arm by rearing back and “pecking” you - and it’s NOT a ‘peck’.

Good thing that president Trump didn’t rescue them ducks. He would be impeached for offsetting the delicate balance of nature, thereby dooming our planet to an early extinction.

(Do I really haffa put a /sarc behind that?)

I did that once myself. There was a whole flock of little ducklings down under a manhole cover grate. I called fire department and they told me to go f myself. Went home, got a crowbar and fishnet and pulled the lot out. Took them to nearby pond and freed them. Re-visited for awhile and they all would come back to me. Youngest daughter witnessed and I am forever her hero for that!

You have to learn how to make friends with them. I’ve fed the ‘wild’ Canada geese at the nearby pond; they’ll take food from my hand and when they’ve become sufficiently familiar with me, they haven’t minded when I came near the nest. They’d bring out the babies to be hand-fed, too.

But it takes a long time, and you can’t do anything threatening or believe that they are ever safe. That male is always watching, watching.

(I have no experience with swans, but have heard that THEY are the really nastiest.)
