I was in a discussion with a friend and he asked if there was a difference between the Covit-19 virus and the Coronavirus. If the two are not the same, which one is the target of the "vaccine?" Not knowing the answer, I said I would present the question to the best deliberators, The FreeRepublic.

As I understand it, “Coronavirus” is a type of virus. Covid 19 is a member of the Coronavirus group. Hence it’s name Novel Coronavirus 19. 19 being it’s year of identification.

Covid stands for COrona VIrus Disease.
19 is the year of the strain. (2019)

COVID is caused by a corona virus, so named because it looks like a crown.
They should change the number 19 to the actual date of manufacture.
Something like 30% to 40% of colds are caused by corona viruses.

Coronavirus is a type of virus of which there are many, including 4 coronaviruses that are among the viruses that cause the common cold. Coronaviruses also include SARS, MERS and SARS-2. And there are many animal coronaviruses that affect animals and not humans.
SARS-2, aka Novel coronavirus 2019 can cause a severe acute respiratory syndrome known as COVID-19.
So COVID-19 is technically the severe respiratory illness that develops from infection with SARS-2.
But I use them all interchangeably, because I want to.
There are several identified other viruses which are Corona type - it’s the shape of the microscopic virus.
The Corona Virus which was Newly Identified in 2019 causes a disease called
COVID-19 which is an acronym for:
Corona Virus - Disease - “2019”
It’s a real disease, and it can be deadly.
Many do recover. Many ‘recover’ but then have long term issues after their ‘recovery’

It’s called the Covid-19 virus informally.

Red B is right. Common cold is a corona family virus.
What are the different types, i.e., Delta and Lambda(also known as India, South African, Brazil versions)? Are they a new virus? With different characteristics?
And have they been isolated?
I did not hear about how “they” determined it is Delta or Lambda, or original. Is there a new test? Doe’s the delta version wear a kilt?
Are we being lead down a rabbit hole?
