President Ford evac of Saigon and a U.S. Senator
Book; “When the Center Held” | 2018 | Donald Rumsfeld

Posted on 08/27/2021 8:01:25 AM PDT by David Chase

In 1975, President Ford was left to manage the difficult ending of the Vietnam War. President Ford went to Congress for a relief package to allow American personnel and our allies to evacuate. However, there was ONE U.S. SENATOR who opposed any such support. The result was the embarrassing and hurried evacuation from the roof of the American Embassy in Saigon.

This Senator reveled in the embarrassment and did everything he could to leverage it politically against Ford. Despite the efforts of this one U.S. Senator, President Ford managed to rescue 1,500 South Vietnamese allies prior to the country’s falls. Had President Ford not acted quickly, these people would have been targeted and slaughtered for their support for America.

When they arrived in America, President Ford asked Congress for a package to assist these refugees to integrate into American Society. That same troublesome Senator TORPEDOED ANY SUPPORT for these shell shocked, anti-communist, Americans and our helpers, the refugees.

Instead, President Ford had to recruit Christian organizations to offer assistance on a voluntary basis. As he did so, the Senator belittled those efforts.

What kind of person would oppose President Ford’s tireless work to do the right and humanitarian thing?

Who would want to play politics with the well-being of innocent people who stood by America in the tragic Vietnam War?

THAT SENATOR WAS JOE BIDEN.

(From the book-“When the Center Held” by Donald Rumsfeld- Biography, 2018)

The one constant, Joe Biden. One of his first votes was for the War Powers Act. This legislation was used to COMPLETELY cut the knees out from under the South Vietnamese troops, who were fighting. Zero gallons of fuel meant zero air cover meant zero chance for our allies and South Vietnam. Same capitulation and rout in Afghanistan, same guilty party.

Biden is driven to make the wrong decision all the time.

I can’t imagine every side he took or vote he made was a bought.
Some of it is pure stupidity.

Disgraceful bad judgment by “Joe Biden” in 1975....

What ever became of that dolt? Did he lose the next election?
Retire from public life and maybe do oil changes under cars at one of those drive thru places? If he could handle that.

Hope he isn’t doing anything that requires judgment and responsibility.

There are still some true conservatives around.

The Rinos are loud mouthed and act like they’re the majority.

I’m optimistic. Until I’m not. LOL

People forget the Valor of the ARVN in those last days. The NVA learned that at Xuan Loc. I do not know if arms, ammo, fuel, equipment would have resulted in a different outcome, but the NVA would have suffered a lot more. And one little story. I taught 25 years in NYC schools. My Queens school spoke 55 languages and dialects. We would each teach one English Second Language class among our 5 sections. My first assignment to each kid in the ESL class was to draw the flag of their old country on an index card and on a second card tell why their family came to America. I got a lot of responses, money, job, opportunity, reunite family. But one stands out. In 1993 a girl handed hers in . I went home that day and started going thru the bunch. I stopped when I came to hers. On one card was a gold flag with three horizontal red stripes. On the other card ws one word, FREEDOM. I actually began to cry. The girl was 12 years old. Saigon had fallen six years before she was born and she and her family still believed in us. Years later I told this to a friend at a HS reunion. He is a retired Admmiral in the USN who had two tours as a SEAL. He listened and as I finished I saw the tears in his eyes. He just said “ Thank you”. No one will say thank you to Joe Biden.

Robert Michael Gates (b. 1943) was Secretary of Defense (2006-2011) for Bush'43 & Barrack Obama. Prior to that he had been 26 years in the CIA and ended being the Director of the CIA under Bush'41. So, by appearance, he is experienced in Intelligence and the SWAMP and not unacceptable to the Obama Administration as he served his last two years as Secretary of Defense in his Cabinet.

Secretary Gates, in his 2014 Memoir, published while Biden was Obama's VP, had less than kind words about Biden's decision making. In an interview at that time he said; "The vice president, when he was a senator — a very new senator — voted against the aid package for South Vietnam, and that was part of the deal when we pulled out of South Vietnam to try and help them survive. He said that when the Shah fell in Iran in 1979 that that was a step forward for progress toward human rights in Iran. He opposed virtually every element of President Reagan's defense build-up. He voted against the B-1, the B-2, the MX and so on. He voted against the first Gulf War. So on a number of these major issues, I just frankly, over a long period of time, felt that he had been wrong."

More recently, in a 2019 CBS "60 Minutes" Interview with Margaret Brennan when Biden was running for the Democratic Party Nomination, Gates when asked about his suitability for the Presidency, said that he didn't know. However he did stand on the quote from his memoir AND further stated; "We disagreed significantly on Afghanistan and some other issues. I think that the vice president had some issues with the military." Secretary Gates also, in that interview, cast doubts upon Biden's ability to overcome his age in handling the burdens of the Office.

Great post.

I was unaware of Biden’s Iran votes in 1979.

Perhaps Biden doesn’t like the military.

It’s anyone’s guess for his motives.
