It will be the first time wheat created using a gene editing technique known as CRISPR has been grown in fields in the UK or Europe, although it is in use in China and the US.
He said acrylamide has been a very serious problem for food manufacturers since it was first discovered in 2002, shown to cause cancer in rodents, and has been considered 'probably carcinogenic' for humans.
'It occurs in bread and increases substantially when the bread is toasted, but is also present in other wheat products and many crop-derived foods that are fried, baked, roasted or toasted, including crisps and other snacks, chips, roast potatoes and coffee,' said Prof Halford.

Even if you don't eat it, when someone else does and you smell it, you are being exposed to second-hand toast.
Man cannot live by bread alone..... Now we know why.....................
A recent Cincinnati Enquirer headline read, “SMELL OF BAKED BREAD MAY BE HEALTH HAZARD.” The article went on to describe the dangers of the smell of baking bread.
The main danger, apparently, is that the organic components of this aroma may break down ozone (I’m not making this stuff up). I was horrified and this was no jokes about bread hazard! When are we going to do something about bread-induced global warming? Sure, we attack tobacco companies, but when is the government going to go after Big Bread?
Well, I’ve done a little research, and what I’ve discovered should make anyone think twice…
More than 98 percent of convicted felons are bread eaters.
Fully HALF of all children who grow up in bread-consuming households score below average on standardized tests.
In the 18th century, when virtually all bread was baked in the home, the average life expectancy was less than 50 years; infant mortality rates were unacceptably high; many women died in childbirth; and diseases such as typhoid, yellow fever and influenza ravaged whole nations.
More than 90 percent of violent crimes are committed within 24 hours of eating bread.
Bread is made from a substance called “dough.” It has been proven that as little as one pound of dough can be used to suffocate a mouse. The average American eats more bread than that in one month!
Primitive tribal societies that have no bread exhibit a low occurrence of cancer, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease and osteoporosis.
Bread has been proven to be addictive. Subjects deprived of bread and given only water to eat, actually begged for bread after only two days.
Bread is often a “gateway” food item, leading the user to harder items such as butter, jelly, peanut butter, and even cold cuts.
Bread has been proven to absorb water. Since the human body is more than 90 percent water, it follows that eating bread could lead to your body being taken over by this absorptive food product, turning you into a soggy, gooey bread-pudding person.
Newborn babies can choke on bread.
Bread is baked at temperatures as high as 400 degrees Fahrenheit! That kind of heat can kill an adult in less than one minute.
Most American bread eaters are utterly unable to distinguish between significant scientific fact and meaningless statistical babbling.
In light of these frightening statistics, we propose the following bread restrictions:
No sale of bread to minors.
No advertising of bread within 1000 feet of a school.
A 300 percent federal tax on all bread to pay for all the societal ills we might associate with bread.
No animal or human images, nor any primary colors (which may appeal to children) may be used to promote bread usage.
A $4.2 zillion fine on the three biggest bread manufacturers.
Humans don’t need any bread.
Though rice and wheat is probably needed to fulfill global population energy requirements.
How many train cars of toast does one have to eat for it to cause cancer?
This is an excuse for more Monsanto genetically modified seeds to take over the world. Don’t you dare plant a gmo seed and don’t you dare complain about your neighbor’s gmos getting onto your land.
I just knew that invention of FIRE stuff was a bad idea.
Now they’re gonna tell us the wheel wasn’t such a good idea either!.................
“More than 98 percent of convicted felons are bread eaters”
Toaster ovens need to be outlawed or at least be highly regulated since they may be considered “dual use” technology.
We can expand the ATF to become the Bureau of ATFB.
When I was a kid the bread bakery was right beside a major road on the outskirts of town. We always slowed down going by it so we could enjoy the smell longer.
generally speaking it’s all about the dough...
Everyone is going to die from eating asparagus then.
Wait...wut? I read somewhere that eating bread not toasted will you?
I read somewhere eating bread not toasted will kill you?
This probably creates a problem that is far worse.
I wish the government wouldn’t mandate this garbage. Folic acid mandates don’t work for all, either.
More importantly if your British, never, ever use any of that American GM grain. It’s poison!
Bee-worthy.
Need more!
quadrotriticale?
My God! I never knew. I worked in a bakery from age 11 to 15. Everyday we baked fresh bread early in ghe morning; seeded rye, pumpernickel, egg and oil, French bread, salt rising, bloomer, braided, hard rolls, parker house, sweet bread. The rolls would come out around 7:00 AM. I would take a metal pie plate and put a couple of spicy sausage patties in in and put it on one of the shelves of the rotary oven. When the sauce was half done I’d crack a couple of eggs in with it. A few revolutions around the oven and the sausage and eggs were ready. I’d take some just-out-of-the-oven Parkerhouse rolls and brush some melted butter on ‘em and that was breakfast.
You got something there. I burn my toast often because I like a crispy toast. My wife goes nuts with the smell of burned wheat bread. But I have no cancer at age 81. So this theory may need an update.
