JOHANNESBURG (AP) — F.W. de Klerk, who shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Nelson Mandela and as South Africa’s last apartheid president oversaw the end of the country’s white minority rule, has died at the age of 85.
De Klerk died after a battle against cancer at his home in the Fresnaye area of Cape Town, a spokesman for the F.W. de Klerk Foundation confirmed on Thursday.
De Klerk was a controversial figure in South Africa where many blamed him for violence against Black South Africans and anti-apartheid activists during his time in power, while some whites saw his efforts to end apartheid as a betrayal.

DeClerk was a disaster for the whites of South Africa (well all really).
He left them nothing but democracy in its worse sense of the word. That is total power for the raw majority and nothing for minorities. I’ve read some serious opinions from learned people that many wanted some sort of shared government or even tribal status for whites. They have almost ZERO say for how they are treated now.
Spare me Marxist inspired comments how the whites were all evil racists. Recall we are talking about the generation of whites that VOTED to DROP apartheid. They deserved far better than what they got.
(And if you are wondering how I know. I was a follower of a now abandoned website called Censor Bugbear which carefully covered the situation of the Boer farmer and his plight for years. It closed because the woman who ran it recently died—2019?— . she was a former protestor against apartheid then was horrified at what she saw take its place then started the website).

They are ALL worse off - blacks included. The lessons from Rhodesia stared them in the face; the only option would be to choose the richest area (in diamonds and/or gold) close to the sea and set up a separate state. Wouldn’t work if you insisted on including blacks as laborers; it would have to be a “European” state on the coast, completely fortified against the surrounding envious natives.
