Chicago Angler Accidentally Catches Enormous Record-Breaking Carp

“I wash fishing for bass,” the Chicago angler admits. But what he first thought was a huge catfish turned out to be a record-breaking carp.

“I was fishing for bass,” Knize admits. “It started running and it was running clearly faster than a big turtle. So I thought it might be a 50-pound catfish.”

The resulting catch – one of many invasive carp – is nothing short of flabbergasting.

Cory Gecht took the mammoth fish to his larger – but still uncertified scale – where the carp weighed in at an astounding 74 pounds. As for it’s sheer size, the bighead came in at 52 inches long with a girth of 34 1⁄2 inches.

Tom Palmisano, proprietor of Henry’s Sports and Bait would open his shop after hours so Knize could weigh the carp on their biggest certified scale. He did so, an the bighead came in at 72 pounds, 8 ounces.

—”That one picture looks photoshopped. “

What is it that you find fishy about the photo?

Amazing that he caught that fish in Humboldt Park, which is in the middle of Chicago.

Why some Polish families keep a live carp in the tub before Christmas

https://matadornetwork.com/read/live-carp-tradition-wigilia/

You can thank the Roman Catholic church for this fishy custom: Christmas Eve was traditionally considered a day of fasting, and devotees were not permitted to eat meat. Seafood, however, was entirely permissible, and over the years, Christmas Eve dinners evolved to include fish as the main course. Carp is the most popular choice in Eastern European countries like Slovakia, Poland, and the Czech Republic, as well as Germany and Croatia.

As “The World’s Worst Fisherman” — and I used to have the coffee mug to prove it — I never caught anything, except seaweed clumps and some driftwood.

Back in the 90s, my father-in-law’s brother-in-law came from CA to OK to visit. My FIL took him fishing and told him they would get some bass. The BIL caught a carp and my FIL told him it was a “bugle-mouth bass” as he took a photo to remember the occasion. The BIL was a part-time bar tender in CA and posted his fishing photo behind the bar so he could tell his big fish story to all of his customers. He was really irritated with my FIL when one of his customers finally clued him about the carp.

When we were in high school we used to walk a creek that ran into Lake Minnetonka and shot carp with our bows. We would give them to the Hmong or throw them into dumpsters.

Maybe I’m crazy, but when I see a fish like that I figure it’s chock full of worms.

Having been stationed in Germany I knew about the carp at Christmas. I have a friend who is a serious outdoorsman as am I. He said he has tried everything to cook carp. Everything from soaking it in milk before hand, deep-fried, baked, seared in a pan with onions… He said every way he cooked it it just tasted like dirt! Color me out!

I wouldn't want that thing in the boat.

I'd cut the line and scram.
