Scientists struggle to monitor Tonga volcano after massive eruption

The eruption of Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha'apai volcano, which sits on the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, sent tsunami waves across the Pacific Ocean and was heard some 2,300 kms (1,430 miles) away in New Zealand.

[O]n-site instruments were likely destroyed in the eruption and the volcanology community was pooling together the best available data and expertise to review the explosion and predict anticipated future activity.

Saturday's eruption was so powerful that space satellites captured not only huge clouds of ash but also an atmospheric shockwave that radiated out from the volcano at close to the speed of sound.

Photographs and videos showed grey ash clouds billowing over the South Pacific and metre-high waves surging onto the coast of Tonga.

There are no official reports of injuries or deaths in Tonga yet but internet and telephone communications are extremely limited and outlying coastal areas remain cut off.

As the superheated magma rose quickly and met the cool seawater, so did a huge volume of volcanic gases, intensifying the explosion...

Some volcanologists are likening the eruption to the 1991 Pinatubo eruption in the Philippines, the second-largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century, which killed around 800 people.

The blast pressure wave rotated the earth more than once. The pressure wave first hit the US west coast going west to east. Then some hours later the pressure wave hit the east coast going east to west. Amazing info.

The radio guy was just relating that a couple dozen Kalifornicators had to be rescued from the surf. They didn’t understand that the expected 2 foot sunami would actually be a surge that just kept coming, instead of a little surfable wave. And that thing washed inland quite a furr piece.

Krakatoa was NOT in 1983.
Your credibility is now below sea-level.

Ya it’ll take a while to determine..

One big thing is..did it umbrella at extreme height? How high did it spew? Etc. I have seen 55 thousand feet, but thats all the speculators around.

I will wait for the real actual reports. The USGS is one of the few government agencies that is still fairly good at this stuff. They work with all the global volcano geologists, etc.

Actually the major effect is the opposite of green house effect.
Particles and sulfur dioxide will reflect sunlight and cause cooling.

I know satellites are circling the earth...but, how in the heck was the satellite right over the eruption at the perfect time?

Was the area being monitored for movement, like they do Mt. Saint Helens?

I remember one of the first movies that I watched as a kid was called “Krakatoa, East of Java” or something such.

Some satellites are geosynchronous or geostationary. I believe that Japanese weather satellites monitor Tonga area for advance weather predictions for Japan.

Great movie!

They used to show it once in awhile on TMC.

Amazing special effects, way before the digital era.

That magma chamber is overdue. And here we are in Cali thinking we can control climate. Earth will have a sneeze and gone is the human experiment.
