We’re from the FAA and we’re here to blame you for our mistakes.
It’s hard to know which is more messed up these days—air transportation, or the Biden Administration. As another case in point, consider the clash between airlines and wireless carriers over 5G.
Carriers paid the U.S. government $80 billion for this valuable spectrum, but the Federal Aviation Administration now won’t let them use it. The agency says the signals could potentially interfere with plane altimeters that measure the distance to the ground.
The Federal Communications Commission reviewed these concerns during notice-and-comment on its plan to repurpose C-band from satellite operators. In March 2020, it approved a 258-page decision that included a safe buffer between the bands occupied by altimeters and 5G—larger than many other countries require.
Yet some 20 months later, the FAA demanded to relitigate the FCC decision and took airlines and carriers hostage That’s far too charitable to the FAA and Transportation Department. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg rolled FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel, who has supported the carriers’ 5G rollout behind the scenes. And now he and Mr. Biden are portraying their blundering as a diplomatic victory. This Administration needs less political spin and more competent governance.

I am rural. I hear that 5G ignores the country folk and is only in urban areas. 5G will allow outfits to shut down 3G and I will be left with much worse if any signal to us, in my countryside.
So some of us have mixed feelings on this 5G move.
This is all much ado about nothing. If some planes have difficulty with their radio altimeters after the roll-out, install some rf filters on those planes and the problems will probably go away. In this day and age of modern electronics there are who knows how many other ways to determine your altitude.
We live on an airport and half of our neighbors are either airline pilots, other types of aviation professionals, or FAA. How many have been grousing about this nonsense over the last few months? NONE!
I am going to ask some of the more knowledgeable this morning to see what they think. So far it reminds me of when 720 channel aircraft radios were introduced. All of a sudden it became illegal to use old legacy radios found in vintage planes because supposedly they would interfere with the new more precise radios. There never were any actual problems that I have ever been made aware of. In that case it was just the FAA pushing its weight around forcing people to upgrade their equipment for who knows what reason.

You should have a 4G signal to work with, even rural. I am now rural Florida and 4G is all I expect to see.

Just 50 clicks out of Chiraq and I live in a cellular black hole!
During peak usage hours, my reception shows one small DOT, not a bar!
I spent many hours on the phone for work and knew to either pull over or end it quickly as I approached the homestead.
Texting was only slightly better, they would transmit hours later! And could be improved by walking to the far back yard and holding the phone high!! TRUE!!!
Just lately I have on occasion noticed the 5G symbol and THREE BARS!!!
But I have learned to be happy with my lowly dot.
And seldom bothered by the damn thing!
We have and use a landline.
No one needs 5G. That’s my argument.

That is exactly the summation of the problem I was looking for. I wonder how many aircraft. Including smaller jets/planes, I wonder how many have this issue.
From the Airworthiness Directive issued by the FAA the problem seems to be that the manufacturers of the radar altimeters have not been able to prove that the 5G C-Band signals could not possibly cause any interference with their equipment. This only affects very precise types of landings in fixed and rotary-wing aircraft that automate the landing all the way to touchdown.
I don’t know how you can prove a negative like the FAA is asking given that any analog radio signal is subject to potential modulation and band shifting due to reflection and side lobe effects. The standard approach is to establish a sufficient bandwidth separation to make significant interference “statistically unlikely” but not “impossible”. This is what the FCC did by establishing the 5G standard with full public comment and oversight. Unless the manufacturers can revoke the laws of physics, they are out of luck.

Please media. Get your reporting correct. 5G does not affect the altimeters. It affects radar or radio altimeters. These are used for low weather approach and’s are. Part of the ground proximity warning systems. The actual altimeters we barometric pressure and are not affected by 5G

Maybe I’m missing something here?
Altimeters are barometric devices. NO electronics are involved.
I suspect they mean Radar Altimeters which commercial airlines MIGHT have installed and are probably rarely used. Radar Altimeters work only in close proximity to the ground. I’ve only flown single engine planes, but I suspect that normal ILS which includes altitude guidance (glideslope) for landing would be the instrument of choice when available, which is nearly everywhere unless it’s out of service at a particular airport and runway.
