70s Legends Wrote This Song as a JOKE…TRANSFORMED Them Into The Gods of Rock!

The story of Led Zeppelin’s 70s rock masterpiece Immigrant Song Although Immigrant Song was written to be entirely tongue in cheek... its humor was almost completely lost on listeners. In fact, this fist in the air rocker was so power-packed that legions lined up to crown its Zeppelin the lords of Rock and Roll. And by then... it was too late to convince anyone that they were more or less joking. Is this smash hit rock’s greatest battle cry anthem? Written by rock’s ultimate guitar hero Jimmy Page and masterfully sung by Robert Plant with John Paul Jones and John Bonham taking it to the highest levels of music

I gave up on this aging roadie who is more concerned about hearing his own voice and opinions...

His channel pops up on my YouTube occasionally and he almost always has a good “hook” to make you interested in what he is going to cover but I have found that he buries the lede way too often for my taste. I will pause his commentary and look at the comment to find out what it is he is talking about. If interested I will fast forward until he catches up to the point that he let get away from him.

This is a three part response.

1. I like watching Professor of Rock. He gets lots of face to face interviews.

2. I don’t like Led Zeppelin. Just sayin

3. My mom’s husband had a cousin who was a record producer or something and lived in Hollywood. When they were visiting he told my mom that a member of Led Zeppelin was his next door neighbor. My mom told me that he said “Mr. Zeppelin is a really nice guy”

.. finding it hard to see how people took the song literally and seriously at the same time...

As a child of the 1950s I can remember a time when “novelty songs” were the rage.

The only point of the music was to make you smile. Most were pretty lame but teenagers are not the most sophisticated people in the world and we liked them.

The link is to a list of some of the novelty songs of the 1950s

Wait you mean he’s not literally hungry like the wolf? (Honestly the only Duran Duran song I know for beans)

I recall reading that Robert Plant says when he wrote the lyrics to Kashmir, he agonized for days about using just the right words to tell the story. I always found that mildly amusing, because although Kasmir is probably my very favorite ‘Warrior-Dirge’ style song by Led Z., I never listened to the lyrics or gave them any thought at all.

It is the music, that aggresive stomping, wreckless march with sitar and bass that makes the song. The vocals provide a guide, akin to some frantic, high pitched pendulum. Plant could have been singing in Greek and his contribution would have been just as effective.

After reading all the replies on this thread, I'm amazed how many don't see the genius of 4 musicians who complimented each other in almost every song. Each was accomplished on their own instruments, and wrote and played music that has stood the test of time.

So what if their lyrics were not clear or esoteric? Their combined expertise on their own instruments is what makes rock legends. C'mon, who can deny Jimmy Page, Paul Jones, Bonham, and even Plant made rock history? You don't have to enjoy their music, but all 4 contributed new riffs and a new sound that has been covered and copied to this day.

I was amazed with their first album and their hit, "Good Times, Bad Times" As a drummer, hearing Bonham's triple bass and other riffs, I was sold. Before them, I was a CREAM fan with Ginger Baker's drumming. Yes, LZ has songs I don't care for.

“I do a forced march (about 6 miles) through the woods to the store a couple of times a week.”

Everyone has two doctors. Their right foot and their left foot. I do a 60-80 minute fast walk every day I can. I don’t have to like it, I just have to do it. Like a third world peasant off to farm his field of beans or a rice paddy. If they can do it, I can do it.

Yeah. I used to walk pretty far back into the woods, or down a creek. No choice but to walk back.

Tortelvis is good, but he needs a new back-up band. WRONGLY performed music is funny... like Tortelvis’s completely inappropriately performed Viking wail. BADLY performed music isn’t funny; it just hurts to listen to. As someone once said of SNL’s absurdly schmatlzy duo (Jan Hooks and I forgot who else), “It takes TALENT to be so bad!”
