Pocono NASCAR Cup Series winner Denny Hamlin and second-place finisher Kyle Busch were disqualified Sunday after their cars failed post-race inspections.
"There was some issues discovered that affect aero in the vehicle," said Brad Moran, managing director of the NASCAR Cup Series, widely considered the top auto race league. "There really was no reason why there was some material that was somewhere it shouldn't have been. And that does basically come down to a DQ."
Hamlin was the first Cup winner to be disqualified since April 17, 1960, when Emanuel Zervakis' victory at Wilson Speedway in North Carolina was thrown out because of an oversized fuel tank, according to ESPN.com.
Both racers' Toyota cars will reportedly be sent to North Carolina for further evaluations at NASCAR's research-and-development center.
The official victory was handed to third-place Chase Elliott but the results can be appealed. Elliott now sits in first place in the official NASCAR rankings.
Hamlin and Busch are part of the Joe Gibbs Racing team, which can appeal NASCAR's decision.
Well it’s a start. Lets see how many Camaros Chevy sells, and how many former fans come back to watch, and if they make any new race fans.
That was a big draw years ago, the cars they raced weren’t much different than one you could get in the showroom, made for a lot of brand loyalty. NASCAR moved away from that, what races on the track hardly resembles what the public could buy, and I think they lost some fan base because of that. And becoming “woke” didn’t help their cause also.
Brian France stopping a race to lecture the audience on racism finished it for me.
Haven’t watched a race since. I was a 40 year fan.
Unfortunately I have to go to Martinsville Speedway in October for some sort of corporate event. I’ll be working it.
OK, I’ve heard of that but was not in My OBASU (On board Acronym Storage Unit) but has been added.
But now I gotta ask: If it’s Wind Tunnel Data then where does the Wind change into Fluids ?
Would that be similar to turning Water into Wine ?
I doubt the drivers typically have access to that level of tech data detail. Hamlin might because he’s also a Toyota team owner.
They are going to run exhibition races with electric cars. Probably at the LA clash race before the SB.
Surprise!
Yeah that happened 40 yrs ago in 1981 when the Gen 3 Cup cars came out.
Jeff Gordon loves the Zl1 and has one in his garage too
No surprise here. I was referring to the 1960’s-70’s cars as that is when the saying about win on Sunday sell on Monday was popular, but I guess I didn’t make that apparent. My fault.
air IS a fluid...
Dang, i woulda sent a letter to complain about it if i had seen him do that-
I did. Told him he lost a fan.
I was working with a track to promote a corporate event which I discontinued. They lost money.
With enough humidity, like in Houston...
