"Officials said the incident happened just past midnight Friday at a 7-Eleven on Kalakaua Avenue.
Honolulu Emergency Medical Services said a man in his 40s was attacked with a sword and sustained multiple wounds. Paramedics treated and transported the victim to the hospital in critical condition.
A witness said there was an altercation between a 7-Eleven employee and another man inside the store.
He said the incident escalated, ending with the employee allegedly cutting victim’s hand off."

"“I was shocked and I spoke with my friend in our language and I said, ‘Did you see what happened?’ and he said, ‘Yes, he just took a sword and cut his hand,’” added Suissa, who is visiting from Switzerland."
~
"While police have not confirmed the suspect is a 7-Eleven employee, Suissa said the man with the sword has served him before and was quite pleasant." Ok, this is creepy.. Just less than 1 block from my apartment...
I didn't personally 'know' this guy, but he has served me when I go there sometimes.
(BTW, I try to avoid going out after darkness around here, and always carry a defensive knife.. but this just hit home)
Also, apologies if this was already posted on or after 7/22, but I have missed it if it was.

I may be the only one here to ask what kind of sword? Because there are lots of different ones.

Instant justice for a shoplifter, sharia-style?

I am curious if he had it in the store or went to his car to get it. You would think that the other workers there (mostly Filipinas) would say something.

"...allegedly cutting victim’s hand off."Because it still hasn't been determined if it fell off by itself or not.

In prison, the shoplifter will get a new nickname: ‘Lefty’!
Now, he’ll only be able to do a ‘five finger discount’.
There’s a fifty percent chance he’ll need a new signature on his ID and other documents/ cards.
He could save money on buying gloves now.

I may be the only one here to ask what kind of sword? Because there are lots of different ones.It was probably a high-capacity assault sword.

Difficult to tell from the article, but the store employee may have used the sword for self defense.

Employees of convenience stores don’t just randomly attack customers with a sword for no reason. Sounds like the guy who had his hand cut off was probably giving him good cause.

In court documents, police said said 46-year-old Jason Walker used a 3- to 4-foot-long sword in the attack last Friday. He faces a charge of attempted murder.Authorities said Walker allegedly severed a man’s left hand during an argument in the parking lot of the Kalakaua convenience store.
Officials said the victim’s right hand was also mutilated and he suffered a gash to his abdomen. He was last reported to be in critical condition.
Not much more detail, but it looks like they knew each other, hence the attempted murder charge.
