Nearly four years ago, I moved from Vancouver, one of the largest cities in Canada, to a remote northern community in Yukon Territory with about 90 residents.
One of the biggest things I had to adapt to was living a 10-hour round trip from the nearest grocery store, which is in Whitehorse. Believe it or not, I've learned to love this unique part of my life.
These days, I'm more confident in the kitchen and I've mastered the art of grocery shopping for up to two months at a time. Here's what it's like.

“If they can afford it, I suggest they get a piper super cub.
And then there is the small thing called a pilot’s license. Instrument rating a must.
“Interesting that they decide to go rough it like that.”
Living remote but not roughing it.
Tuck your toes under 107 degree warmth and you appreciate the bond more :)
Trapping is hunting, just not with direct fire weapons. The list of things she could do to feed her family is long - none of which involve going to a grocery store, unless all other methods are not producing.
She could be near the Yukon River, but the Frasier does not reach to the Yukon territories. That river has lots of salmon also, just not sockeye.
I don’t live in the Yukon Territories. But I have lived in the wilderness and did not use a grocery store, if I could help it.
I get what she’s saying. Btdt. But I have one question. Howdo you keep that much fresh produce from rotting before yougetachance to eat it? The best I could ever accomplish was 3 weeks in amakeshift fridge in our adobe house. If I used a fridge, they began to rot after 1 week.
Our makeshift fridge was a cardboard box lined with tinfoil. Adobe houses are nearly 2 feet thick and the windows are placed to the outside leaving a cubbie dor a window sill inside. Hang a heavy blanket over that cubbie and it gets very cold, but not so things freeze.
Today, I have a fridge in the city, but my fresh produce is lucky to last up to 2 weeks depending on the item, like cilantro. I can freeze parsley, but not cilantro.
Is the air dry there? Humidity helps things to spoil quicker.
Yes, many of the videos have you camping not too far from your car, at least on your first few trips.
There is a nearby airport, but I'm not sure if it rated for IFR. It is likely rated for a special. If you can find the airport it is OK to land..

107? Nope.
Ever watch Joe Robinette vids? Been watching his camping vids for years on youtube.
Well at least your frozen food won’t melt on the way home! So there’s that...
But 5 hours? And that's with nothing, not even a streetlight along the way. And the winter? I'm thinking I would be starring in The Shining soon after the first snowflake hits the ground...
Beaver Creek, Yukon near the port of entry to Alaska on the AlCan highway.
Not sure what this couple is like - I wonder what their mode of protection is tucked so far away, and not to mention the long drives.
“Trapping is hunting”
Where I live it’s two separate licenses, except with the hunting license you have to have documentation of courses and updated safety training etc... with trapping you don’t need any of that extra paperwork, and you still use a weapon for dispatch, if needed.
As does *any* vehicle. :)
I knew a licensed A and P that never got any pilot ratings, yet flew all around the 48 (stayed out of most controlled airspace). Self taught mostly, even on instruments.
He was developing his own airpark/condo community in Warren County, IL, when he died of natural causes years ago. Airpark dream died with him.
His last bird (that I know of) was a nice Bellanca Viking, which he had restored.
I (Private-MEL-land) taught myself loops and rolls in Piper Tri-Pacer when I was 19.
