Collier County man arrested for allegedly targeting, killing endangered birds

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) -Florida Fish and Wildlife officers have arrested a Collier County man for five misdemeanor charges related to violations against endangered or threatened species.

Officials say the incident occurred on Jan 9, on Marco Island. Officers say Renardo Stewart accelerated and ran a golf cart through a flock of black skimmers resting on the beach. Marco Island Police Department detained Stewart and he admitted to driving the golf cart through the flock of birds.

The black skimmer is protected by the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act. It is also protected as State Threatened by Florida’s Endangered and Threatened Species Rule.

Black skimmers rely on Florida’s sandy beaches to nest and to rest in flocks, called colonies. Black skimmers are named for how they skim along the surface of the water to forage for fish, dragging their long lower bill in the water. Resting skimmers often lay their entire bodies on the sand to give their neck muscles a break after foraging, a behavior called loafing. Like sleeping, loafing is a vital part of a bird’s survival. The FWC reminds the public of the importance of giving black skimmers and other coastal wildlife space to safely forage and rest on our beaches.

If you witness someone threatening or harassing wildlife, please contact the Wildlife Alert hotline at 888-404-FWCC (888-404-3922).

Animals and people are not equivalent.

We have dominion over the animals.

It is good and right to protect endangered species. And to prevent animal cruelty. But not to elevate animals to some sort of sacred position, or go ballistic on a man who made a move that seems almost genetically implanted in us; kids run at flocks of birds all the time. We are hunters and etc. If there is a fine, so be it. But the man is not a moral monster.

I see you’re one of those nuts that put animals over humans. /s

Your very first comment made you look like a total moron - now you're just proving you are one... stupid old man.

And yes, people who kill innocent animals, bothering nobody, need to be beaten - like the soulesss bags of s**t their parents raised.

Apples and oranges. Try again. There are pretty birds, not humans.

I simply asked a question in my original post, because ‘allegedly’ was in the title and there were no details in the article, like how many birds were killed. It is not precise. In my belief hierarchy, the media is at the bottom, right there with government. I don’t believe either, hence the question. Given government consistently over steps its power, I think the question was valid. That’s because I think, unlike the people fly off the handle because of their feelings for birds.

"The title did say “allegedly”. That leaves doubt in my mind. Perhaps I am too binary."

One of the five he killed.

If they’re too stupid to avoid incoming danger, it’s no wonder they’re endangered.

Natural selection is a thing.

And elevating the value of animal life anywhere near human life is lunacy. They are not people.

So I guess that you are superior to all other life on this planet. Let me know what you think when your grandkids ask what a bird is.

Too bad?

It’s biblical.

The Bible says, “A good man is kind to his animals.” It also says we are to “Rise, kill and eat” them (they are food) and that we are to have dominion over them, repeatedly. Prior to the sacrifice of Christ we were to sacrifice them, a lot.

So we deduce it is not a sin to kill an animal; but it is a sin to be cruel, say, torture.

Animals are not people and it is unhealthy for you to have an inappropriately elevated view of them. They are beautiful, marvelous, parts of creation and can certainly be admired.

And the civil magistrate can pass laws protecting species for diversity, sure, but keep them reasonable.

Okay, so if I ever see your fat ass laying on a beach, I'll just run you over with my truck.

So now you are telling me what and how to think. I know that is not going to happen. Please let me know where in the bible it says: “Rise, kill and eat” them (they are food).

Well, we kind of all tell each other what to think here. It is an opinion forum.

“ 9 On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour:

10 And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance,

11 And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending upon him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth:

12 Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.

13 And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat.

14 But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean.

15 And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.

16 This was done thrice: and the vessel was received up again into heaven.”

Acts ch 10

We are also told that animals are for our food and we have directions how to use them including explicit instructions about sacrificing them.

But there are admonitions re decent treatment that is as I said previously, a good man is kind; we are not to muzzle an ox when it treads the grain also comes to mind. All the while utilizing them for labor, food, even sacrifice until Christ came.
