Two celebrated, decades-old San Francisco bookstores are set to close this year, marking the end of an era for Alexander Book Company and The Magazine.
Bonnie Stuppin, one of the owners of Alexander Book Company, said the SoMa bookstore will likely shutter toward the end of April after 32 years of service. The reason, she says, is because downtown San Francisco offices aren’t nearly as packed as they used to be. “We’re not seeing enough customers to justify opening the doors and turning the lights and paying the staff to come down,” she told SFGATE.
“I don’t know what needs to happen, but I know there needs to be more people downtown because it’s just not sustainable as it is,” she said, describing the closure as “a gut punch.”
It’s not the only San Francisco literary institution that plans to shut down this year, either.
Earlier this month, The Magazine, a 50-year-old gay bookstore in the Tenderloin specializing in "ephemera and erotica," announced that it plans to shut down in 2023.

Well, I guess people will have to shop online.
SF used to be such a great city to visit.
“We’re not seeing enough customers to justify opening the doors and turning the lights and paying the staff to come down,”
Guarantee you that she’s a far left nut who probably wishes that all of society was still 100% locked down due to COVID.
There’s a bookstore near me that I used to go to. I stopped in a few months ago and they were insisting that customers put on rubber gloves before entering the shelves. They didn’t insist on that DURING the pandemic, only AFTERWARDS. So I’m not going back there again. The crazies can go broke for all I care, I’ll just give my money to Amazon I guess.
I doubt that people are stealing books.
I’m quite sure the owners have been reliable voters of the political morons who ruined their businesses.
Yet, like all good socialists, they refuse to connect the dots.
The only bookstore I've been in the past many years was in Chatham, MA. I walked in as I waiting for my wife in the store next door to see if they had any conservative books, not a one and they had a sign up to wear a mask, which I wasn;t wearing. Turned around and left. Bookstores are notoriously left wing.
“Two decades-old San Francisco bookshops to close”
Sucks for the owners, but 20 years is not that long in business.
I was last there in 2005. Had a great time. There was some homeless/addict problems, but pretty limited compared to what you see today. It’s just entirely out of control now.
Sad.
Well, that's a hell of a cultural loss!

SF used to be such a great city to visit.
That liberal Big Blue city will give you everything you need, and no one will hassle you!
This is a wonderful opportunity for you! Do it now!

A few Christmases ago I was out shopping and stopped in a bookstore. The place reeked of leftists, including the snotty staff. The clerk gave me an uppity look at the hunting book for my SIL when I checked out.. I chucked and said something like, I see you’re at the pinnacle of your career. Merry Christmas!
I only buy books online now, along with most retail goods.
Plus you get to keep any merch you like for free in any store as long as you do not go over $900 per store - to be on the safe side.
San Freako is no place for class like good books.
