Two teens who carjacked a man at a gas station in Germantown, Maryland were unable to drive away because they didn't know how to operate the car's manual transmission, police say.
A 16-year-old from Rockville and a 17-year-old from Washington, D.C. were arrested after the carjacking on Saturday at the Sunoco gas station on Frederick Road, Montgomery County police said.
A man had just finished pumping gas and was getting into his car when he saw the two teens running toward him, police said. The teens then forced his door open, grabbed him and demanded his keys, which he handed over to them.
When the teens got into the car, they didn't know how to operate the car's manual transmission, police said, so they got out of the car and ran off.
Soon after, officers saw them nearby and took them into custody after a brief chase on foot, police said.
Both teens were arrested and charged with one count of carjacking and one count of conspiracy carjacking, police said. They are in jail without bond.

I parked at an offsite airport parking lot. When I returned my car was blocked and attendant could not move it, because it was a Manuel transmission. After a brief discussion he agreed to let me move it and gave me the keys. You would think that a car jockey would know how to drive one.

A family member has a manual transmission and often goes to valet parking where it’s a 50/50 chance they have to park their own car.

I learned to drive a stick shift on a very forgiving Ford F150 pickup working construction as a summer job. As I was shoveling mud out of the footing trench the foreman came up and said they needed a guy to go pick up supplies and asked if I knew how to drive a stick. The only word out of my mouth was “yes.” I got the truck off the lot and behind the Hardee’s where I could practice without him seeing me. I made it to Kokomo Lumber and back. For the rest of the summer on hot afternoons I drove around Kokomo listening to Vince Lloyd and Lou Boudreau do Cub games on WGN radio.
Some genius stole my recumbent bike but dumped it a block away because he couldn’t ride it.
I drive a 5-speed Xterra. Never worry about it for the same reason- kids can’t drive stick shifts.
One incident in Texas the carjackers freaked out after seeing the Honda Accord they were about to carjack was stick-shift, they shot and killed the driver in the presence of his wife and kids.
My first car was a VW 1964 Bug, manual transmission. It was truly fun to drive. I taught my little sister how to drive it when she was 16.
