The Ruby Princess cruise ship won't depart San Francisco until Sunday after being damaged while docking at Pier 27, the cruise line confirmed to ABC7 News Friday afternoon.

Ruby Princess says repairs are currently underway and the new estimated departure time from San Francisco is 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 9.

As a result, the itinerary has been revised and the ship will now sail a seven-day Pacific Northwest/Alaska voyage, visiting Ketchikan on July 12 and Prince Rupert on July 13, returning to San Francisco on July 16 for disembarkation as originally scheduled. The cruise line says guests will be free to come and go from the ship while alongside in San Francisco beginning Friday afternoon.

Guests who elect to cancel their cruise will receive a 100% refund of their cruise fare, post-cruise hotel packages and transfers booked through Princess, prepaid shore excursions and other prepaid items and taxes, fees and port expenses, the cruise line said. Each guest will also receive a 50% Future Cruise Credit of the cruise fare paid on this voyage, which may be applied to any future Princess cruise that is booked by February 1, 2024 and sails by February 1, 2025. They may remain onboard until 11 a.m. Sunday, July 9 to better assist with alternative plans they may be making.

Wow... interesting. I was out there Saturday in my boat (20’ deep V” doing some halibut fishing off oyster point... no luck there.. end of day we went to the bay bridge to do some sight seeing... it was very busy with sail boats, tour boats, kayacks, and everyone else with motor boats..... I’m a rookie in the bay but it was a lot fun and stress.

Which is safer:

Hitting an iceberg in the North Atlantic and sinking, killing a out two thirds of those aboard?

Hitting the dock in San Freakcisco and being stuck there for three days (fatality count among those aboard and abandoning ship not yet determined)?

Wouldn’t this ship have to have a harbor pilot and then there are the two tugs that should have been helping?

Want to see a good one? The guy narrating (and cussing) is T Bone. While he was filming I was on the dredge that got hit evacuating the ship. It was pretty wild.

At this point, the captain is by the nature of his position responsible for what happened and in charge of his vessel.

However, once an ocean going vessel near a port, a local harbor pilot takes over and bring the ship into port. Once a ship gets close to its berth, a docking pilot comes aboard and directs one or two tugboat to move the ship along side the dock; at that point the ship is secured by lines to the dock.

Yes, your post came a few minutes before mine. I would expect it would also have a docking pilot-not necessarily the harbor pilot who would be in charge of docking the vessel.
However, if the captain of the ship believes the harbor pilot or docking pilot is incapable of performing his or her duties, he or she (the captain) is ultimately incharge and would need to relieve the pilot of his or her duties.
