Johnny Lujack was one of the faces of Notre Dame’s golden age, the second of three Irish players to win the Heisman Trophy in the 1940s and the quarterback of three national championship teams.

“Even by Notre Dame standards, you always felt he was larger than life,” said John Heisler, who has written a dozen books on the history of the storied program where he was once was an associate athletic director. “Part of that comes with winning the Heisman Trophy, part comes from being a quarterback at Notre Dame and part comes from the sheer force of his personality.”

Lujack died at age 98 in Naples, Florida, on Tuesday following a brief illness. His granddaughter, Amy Schiller, said he had recently entered hospice care after having been in good health until a couple of weeks ago.

Like so many others, his life was clearly shortened by playing football! /sarc

Interesting. A long life. R.I.P.

But did he murder anyone? Oh, my mistake. I'm thinking of that other Heisman Trophy winner.

Ever since ostensibly Catholic Notre Dame invited the abortion loving Obama to give the commencement address and actually conferred on him a Doctorate of Laws degree, the school has been cursed. It has not come close to winning a national championship in any sport. Its football program has descended into the second tier.

Just a great great legend of the immediate postwar era. Rest in peace, Johnny, and say hello to Rockne and Reagan.

Yeah, the death of a 98-year-old man definitely demonstrates a curse.

Glad he had long life. Part of old school greatest generation. When I was about 10 or 11 he was a Chicago Bear and present at a massive cub scout athletic event that I participated in. Won my event and the prize was his photo autographed by him in my presence. I’ll never forget.

The native of Connellsville, Pennsylvania, played for the Irish in 1942 and ‘43, served two years in the Navy during World War II, and returned to Notre Dame for the 1946 and ’47 seasons.

Yep, on Harrison Street. Now it’s a superstore with maybe a dozen brands. IIRC, Lujack-Schierbrock was a Chevy/Buick/Cadillac dealer December of 76, when I bought a 74 Corvette. He was in a meeting with management before leaving to winter in Florida. I thought about waiting to meet him, but was anxious to get in the vette and cruise.

Just a couple blocks away was a disco called “Uncle Sam’s” I went there quite a bit in 76. Then another called ‘Omni’ opened a block in 77. Got married Aug 78, and within a few weeks my bride and I stopped going to the bars and discos entirely.

Curiosity got me to do a bit more research. Scheirbrock was his father-in-law.

I never bought GM’s but they were huge in the area. I had a co-worker who went to school with his daughter. He said she was “a stone fox.”

I’m guessing his daughter went to Catholic schools, with high school being Assumption, which was only a few blocks sw of the dealership.

I’m thinking that because Lujack was famous, and a handsome fellow, Scheirbrock’s daughter was surely a doll. So it doesn’t surprise me that a Lujack daughter was pretty. I read that of his three kids, the oldest and youngest were girls. I was sad to see the youngest only lived to 48. She was born in 54 like me.
