Vive la différence: Brain cells of males and females respond differently to chronic stress

Scientific excellence requires diversity – research conducted by men and women, by people from different backgrounds and with varied worldviews. The need for diversity extends to scientific experiments themselves, but even today the vast majority of studies in the life sciences are done on male mice only, which could harm the findings, as well as our ability to extrapolate from them to humans.

A new study by researchers from the Weizmann Institute of Science addresses this challenge, revealing in unprecedented detail how the brains of male and female mice respond differently to stress. In the study, published in Cell Reports, researchers from Prof. Alon Chen’s joint laboratory at the Weizmann Institute and the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry in Munich discovered that a subcategory of brain cells responds to stress in a totally different manner in males and females.

The findings could lead to a better understanding of health conditions affected by chronic stress, such as anxiety, depression and even obesity and diabetes, and they could pave the way toward personalized therapies for these disorders.

Mental and physical disorders caused by chronic stress are constantly on the rise, putting a significant strain on society. They affect both men and women, but not necessarily in the same way. Although plenty of evidence suggests that men and women deal differently with stress, the causes of these differences are not yet fully understood, and in any event, personalized treatments for men and women are still beyond the reach of medicine. But researchers from Chen’s laboratory, which specializes in studying the response to stress, hypothesized that innovative research methods could help to change the picture.

Previous studies in other labs had uncovered certain sex differences in the response to stress, but those findings were obtained....Chen’s laboratory, in contrast.... .....

Who knew?!

The male mice look to just sit quietly and forget the stress, maybe relax a bit. But the female mice won't stop talking about it, demanding a detailed plan for getting rid of the cat outside their hole right now.

The article doesn’t mention the revolutionary discovery that was prerequisite to this study: they were able to determine which mice were male and which were female, just by looking at them.

Are you sure they didn’t ask the mice what they identified as?

I read an article recently which focused on the findings of some computer scientists who discovered that AI has a major weakness. It cannot understand the feminine aspect of human thought and language.

This apparently proves that AI systems are male.;-)

I don’t think they have that problem. Yet.

Anyone who accepts the drivel that men and women are not different psychologically is a fool. They are as different psychologically as they are physically.

People with gender dysphoria have successfully convinced some very foolish people, including large numbers of psychologists and psychiatrists, that their dysfunction is perfectly normal. It is obviously not. Only the weak minded and stupid will allow themselves to be persuaded.

Gender dysphoria is a disorder of the reproductive system which interferes with its function. To argue otherwise is like arguing that renal or cardiac dysfunction is perfectly normal and no pathological.

There was an Azimov story about a female robot.

All I could find was:

But it’s now known that the variability among male animals, on a molecular and behavioral level, is usually greater than among females, so there is no reason to suppose that females would complicate the experiments any more than males.

For me, this translates to male and female mice share some of the same reactions to stress but that males have more reactions. But maybe I missed something, since I scanned over the bio-lingo that befogged my brain.

Some research mice strains are the same price, male or female, but males are generally cheaper. I wonder how much it cost them to figure all that out?

I think men love the idea of female robots because they have had such trouble with the real thing--women, that is (just recently tho...only since the Garden of Eden).

A female robot would have to be logical and rational--being a robot--and therefore understandable. Whereas real women...not so much.

The problem is AI are unable to take the advice from Jack Nicholson’s character in “As Good As It Gets” and “forget reason and accountability”.

Female cats will gang up on a mouse and chase it all over the house all night long. The tomcat will just sit there, yawn, and watch the females do all the work.

I guess that none of these scientists are married.

The Asimov female robot had intuitive hunches that turned out to be almost always right, but were not based on deductive or inductive logic. There is another form of logic posited by a mathematician called “fuzzy logic,” but like intuitive hunches, I know nothing about how they work, except they’re similar.

I'm not sure anyone understands how the feminine aspect works. As an aside, it is worth noting that both men and women have a feminine aspect.

The Large Language Models of AI certainly couldn't grasp it.
