Lahaina Front Street, the second most visited spot in Maui, has always held a special place in the hearts of our family. From our childhood visits in 1990 to our recent trip in June, Front Street has been a constant source of joy and memories.

During our last visit, we felt compelled to record a video capturing the essence of this vibrant street. Little did we know that this would become a poignant reminder of what once was.

Today, on August 9, 2023, devastating news of the billions of dollars in damage to Lahaina and its surrounding communities, particularly Front Street, has left us heartbroken.

Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone on the island as they face this unimaginable loss. Through sharing this video, we hope to bring a glimmer of happiness and pay tribute to the beauty and spirit of Lahaina Front Street.

God bless everyone in Maui. Mahalo for the memories.

Is this the last most current video driving down front street?

For those who have been to Lahaina in the past, even in the recent past, this short video will help you reflect on its beauty and (hopefully) on some fond memories.

For those who were not lucky enough to have experienced Lahaina, now wiped out by fire, this may help give you a sense of how idyllic that place was, and how lovely its people.

Lahaina is a very special place to my family as well. We travel to Hawaii basically every year and Maui has always been my favorite. I don’t know how many birthdays or anniversaries we’ve celebrated there, but every one was special. Heartbreaking to see what has happened.

We have a watercolor painting of Lahaina from an ocean view.

I recall going to Cheeseburgers in Paradise for one of their burgers with a thick slab of sweet Maui onion. That was 40 or so years ago.

Watching the video made me tear up... I did read the big Banyan may survive.

Yes, truly heartbreaking. Fearing the official death toll may spiral upward, given how swiftly and without real warning the entire town was engulfed in flames. Straight line winds of up to 80mph were supposedly blowing down the mountain slope, straight for the coast and Lahaina town.

Have heard opposing predictions but hope as you do that it somehow survives.

Yes, bittersweet to watch now.

Y.W.—saw it yesterday. Tracked it down in cell phone history today to share it on FR for those for whom it might mean something. 😔

I am not buying the official explanation. Dry conditions ? It’s an island in the middle of the ocean surrounded by warm water.

Last time I visited Maui was by bringing our 4Runner over from Oahu on the Super Ferry.

Of course, Maui groups were among the many that fought to kill the Super Ferry, and why I refuse to ever visit there again.

Endless lines of tourists in rental cars wherever you went.

Look at the photos. This from a “wildfire” in a hot humid tropical island ?

I am not a conspiracy theorist but if you told me this was China demonstrating a satellite based weapon I would it more credible than a spontaneous “ forest fire “ in a little tropical island.

Leeward (western) side is dry in that it sees little rainfall.

Recent exceedingly low-humidity has been unusual.

A high pressure system to the north was gently rotating clockwise and the full-blown hurricane well to the south was nevertheless rotating counterclockwise, turbocharging the normal wind pattern (generally west as mentioned) for the Hawaiian Islands squeezed in between these two separate weather events.

A small earlier wildfire of dry wild grass somewhat up the mountain slope was said earlier in the day to have been contained 100 percent, causing some local residents to breathe easy and perhaps lower their guard. But something went ***spark*** a little farther south above town, then screaming straight line winds (upwards of 80mph) seems to have taken that initial flame and created a literal firestorm almost instantaneously.
