Local UAW leader slams Biden for inaction as strike against Detroit automakers enters its second day - with union's war chest prepared for a full walkout lasting up to three months

The United Auto Workers strike against the 'Big Three' Detroit carmakers entered its second day on Saturday, and some union members are questioning whether President Joe Biden has done enough to back their cause.

The strike involves 13,000 workers so far, less than a tenth of the union's total membership, but UAW's strike fund has enough cash to support a full 150,000-member walkout for up to three months.

The union representing workers at General Motors, Ford and Stellantis is seeking a 40 percent raise for its workers. The walkout is limited for now to three assembly plants: a GM factory in Wentzville, Missouri, a Ford plant near Detroit, and a Jeep plant run by Stellantis in Toledo, Ohio.

In Kokomo, Indiana, the hometown of UAW boss Shawn Fain, Local 685 President Garry Quirk told Politico that Biden, the self-described 'most pro-union president in American history,' had not done enough to prevent a strike.

'I don't know what he's done,' Quirk said. 'Ask him. I don't think he knows what he's done. Seriously. I'm not trying to be mean.'

Quirk, 60, told the outlet he voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016, and then Donald Trump in 2020.

Fellow local member Denny Butler, 52, also expressed frustration at the White House's perceived lack of action.

'We haven't had a president in there for years, with the exception of Trump, that was really for the people, all the way back to the Reagan days,' he told Politico.

He noted that unions were once tightly aligned with the Democratic Party, but said that was no longer the case.

'Democrats were for the working people. That s**t has changed. I'm telling you what, the Democratic Party was not what it was 20, 30 years ago.'

On Thursday, Biden spoke with Fain...

Why would the union telegraph how long it can hold out?!

Note to the rank and file: You lot are your own worst enemy.

When Joe was being raised by Puerto Ricans in Israel he wore a hard hat every day, so he’s covered.

As a Teamster for 33 years, I was on strike once in 1996. Our Teamster strike pay was $56/week. Of course our company provided medical was pulled. We were quickly starved back onto the job. I am proud to say Teamster leadership never missed a dime of their massive contributions to Slick’s reelection campaign that year.

Their demands seem a bit extreme to me...

Just shut all the factories...
Put out feelers for selling off/transporting factory equipment..
Don’t engage with the union in any way
Start filing whatever paperwork is required to close plants
Let it be known you are interested in takeover bids
notify parts suppliers you will not be needing any more shipments

A game of chicken with high stakes...
artothdeal

Almost no one will be buying cars in the near future anyway... and there are a lot of repos going on now.

Glad I drive an old Toyota... no worries

I would be willing to bet that Teamster leadership never missed a dime of their own personal compensation either.

“Their demands seem a bit extreme to me...”

46% raise
32 hour week but 40 hour pay
Full restoration of the Pensions from 20 years ago.
Yeah you might say a bit extreme

But hey people won’t mind paying $100,000 for a Ford focus, will they?

There is no reason why auto workers in the US should make more than auto workers in Korea, China or Mexico.

Surely 32-hour work weeks and 40% pay increase for less work is a concept funded by the chicoms here in the U.S. and China...

With China’s economy already in tatters or under water (actually), they would welcome replacing the two remining U.S. auto companies...

They’ve already infested American science, education, and land resources, why not put the final nail in the U.S. economic coffin...

The unions always demand their members vote Democrat.
Now the Democrats have brought you high inflation so you need more pay to make up for it.

If the Unions go on strike, the Democrats have flooded the US with illegal aliens ready to take the place of the striking workers.

No matter how this turns out, in the next election I expect the Unions to demand their members vote ...DEMOCRAT.

I’m in a union, and screw these UAW tools. Bunch of grifting bastards. The president doesn’t have anything to do with your contract, tools.

Yes. The Chicoms have Brandon by his balls.

At the same time, they cannot allow the return of President Trump.

Even if they win, the EV jobs are going to Mexico and China. So all the winning will be for naught.
