When The Tide is Out, The Table is Set

A common saying among the coastal people of Alaska is “When the tide is out, the table is set.” As a Native Alaskan who grew up eating fresh salmon, oysters, crabs and other shellfish, I have sat at that table. These subsistence and cultural resources have been important for the Aleut, Yupik, Alutiiq and Athabascan peoples who have lived near where I sit in Seldovia, Alaska.

I was in Alaska recently and I learned about the importance of ebb tide - as native Alaskans prepare to feast on the low tide's "table" and eat all the excellent seafood that becomes available.

I ate such delicacies every day!

It is good when the tide is out.

Don't forget the blubber! Nothing is better than coming home after a hard day's work than to be greeted by a bowl of hot steaming blubber. Mmm mmm good.

I just looked at your FR homepage. Nice!

Grace is God giving us something we do not deserve.
Mercy is God not giving us something we do deserve.

May I add: "Justice is getting what you deserve."

I often use this metaphor:
A police officer pulls you over for speeding. You're guilty.
Mercy - He does not give you a speeding ticket. Lets you off
Justice - He gives you a ticket, you pay a fine.
Grace - He GIVES YOU (!) two tickets - the the upcoming Policeman's Ball!

I envy you! Salmon is good eating. Only had it freshly caught once. Alaska is a land of bounty.

Ocean acidification is caused when carbon dioxide emissions get absorbed by the ocean, changing its chemistry.

Boy, that article ended abruptly.

Is that a reference to the ebb tide being out? ;>))

Sounds like an opportune time for a low tide feast.

“Do they still have a policeman’s ball?”

We always had a blast at the Miners and Trappers Ball during Rondy!

We used to go to a bar called the Bore Tide between Anchorage and Girdwood. Interesting watching the water in the Inlet there.

And the Bird House.

That bar also was a polling place.

We did a New England cruise about 10 years ago. We went to the Bay Fundy - one of the greatest tidal changes.

The tidal range in the Bay of Fundy is about 52 ft; the average tidal range worldwide is only 3.3 ft. Some tides are higher than others, depending on the position of the moon, the sun, and atmospheric conditions. (Source: Wikipedia)

How late were the polls oven? That would make for some great conversations!

IIRC, polls closed at 8:00. I was Elections Coordinator then, and should remember, but that was 40 years ago. I’m old; I’m confused.

“I’m old; I’m confused.”

Same here. Glad you properly interpreted my typo.

So, if the bartender was the election coordinator then Dems would be saying, “Bar-keep - I’ll have another (vote).”
