Texas Hunters Finally Hook Huge Alligator They Spent 20 Years Chasing
Houston Chronicle ^ | Oct 5, 2023 | Ariana Garcia

One of the fishermen had a message for critics of the legal harvesting.

After 20 years of chasing down an elusive 13-foot-long alligator in a Southeast Texas bayou, a group of fishermen have finally caught the gargantuan reptile. Last week, Robert Hennis, his son Joel, Rev. John Benandini Jr. and Tommy Strawn pulled the 680-pound beast from the waters of Turtle Bayou, located near Anahuac in Chambers County, Texas, according to a report from Liberty County's Bluebonnet News.

The harvesting took place behind Robert's home just before the end of Texas' alligator hunting season, which ran between Sept. 10 and Sept. 30. It was a long time coming. "We have been trying to get this gator for 20 years," Joel told Bluebonnet News. "Every year, a week before the season, we will see him, and then we won't see him again until after the season is over. This time he bit the wrong hook."

That’s the same prop they used in Peter Pan. Imagine Captain Hook there and it’s the same croc.

One of the oldest alligators in captivity was only 11-12 ft. and between 400 to 450 lbs. He was in his 80s. It would be interesting if they had some idea of this one’s age. He might’ve been more than the expected top age of 50 for alligators in the wild.

Probably like fish...if you don’t overfed them they don’t grow as fast as when food is unlimited.

A twelve footer was pulled out of our neighborhood pond several years ago.

Got a idea, tell you what let’s do
Let’s go out to that place on the Turtle Bayou
We’ll maybe get lucky, maybe get shot
It couldn’t be half the trouble I got

[Refrain]
Turtle Bayou turn around
Turtle Bayou turn around

[Verse 2]
Just another night with the missus and me
Settin’ on the couch watchin’ Court TV
But lemme tell you son it can sure get real
If you ever get to thinkin’ it’s a done deal

[Chorus]
Turtle Bayou turn around
Get your big feet up off the ground
Turtle Bayou turn around
We’ll pass a good time out past the lights of town

[Instrumental]

[Verse 3]
She comes from the land of the Bois d’Arc tree
Scotts Irish and Cherokee
She come down here when the northers blow
She don’t care for the ice and snow

[Chorus]
Turtle Bayou turn around
Get your big feet up off the ground
Turtle Bayou turn around
We’ll pass a good time out past the lights of town

[Instrumental]

[Bridge]
Take my hand Oklahoma Jane
One little dance wouldn’t hurt a thing
Now it’s noon, I’m rollin’ up the drive
And I ain’t even got a decent lie

[Verse 4]
Doesn’t everybody get that way sometimes?
I was lookin’ at every woman but mine
I was lookin’ at the faces, lookin’ at the parts
Lookin’ through the hole in the bottom of my heart

[Chorus]
Turtle Bayou turn around
Get your big feet up off the ground
Turtle Bayou turn around
We’ll pass a good time out past the lights of town

[Refrain]
Turtle Bayou turn around
Turtle Bayou turn around

"We have been trying to get this gator for 20 years,"

Call me skeptical but something tells me that 20 years ago that 13 ft. gator wasn't 13 ft. long.........

But then again, these are red neck good ol' boys so their math might not be up to normal standards.........LOL!
