Faculty at a Massachusetts high school have canceled "USA Day" from its spirit week activities this year because they wanted to "avoid politics," local outlets reported this week.
In a letter to the school community, Wellesley High School principal Jamie Chisum explained that school staff canceled the patriotic-themed day to avoid a topic that had become "politicized."
"USA Day" was slated to be held on the last day of the high school’s festive week, allowing kids to dress up in their patriotic gear and celebrate America. The theme was replaced by "Fitness Friday," though students were still invited to wear their patriotic apparel.
Student Unification Program member Olivia Spagnuolo spoke to local Boston 25 about the school’s decision, saying it was not open for debate. "The administration was not going to let this happen. It wasn’t a topic for discussion," she said.
Spagnuolo’s group had been tasked with coming up with the daily themes for this year’s spirit week, which included "Throwback Thursday" as well as "Wild West Wednesday."
The week of festivities has always been part of building up school spirit leading up to the school’s annual Thanksgiving football game.
Spagnuolo explained the administrators’ decision, saying, "They said it was not allowed because it separated people at the school." The Student Unification Program also noted that this is not the first year that the idea for a patriotic spirit day has been vetoed.
Chisum’s letter provided more detail on the move, stating, "The high school Administration decided not to go forward with that spirit theme because it felt really different than the other themes kids came up with for the week. We felt that the topic has been politicized beyond our school and we wanted to avoid politics."

GTHO, GO TO CHINA OR CUBA!
A beautiful wealthy town…..
….
Publick Screwals are too politicized? ROTFLMAO! Teachers telling the young skulls full of mush who to vote for. Teachers destroy Republicans, conservatives, Christians and Republican Presidents. Teachers currently engaging in anti-semitism. Destruction of American History. Walkouts by students to “protest for extra credit”. Teachers pimping homosexuality and transgenderism. Teachers going on strike all of the time. Kicking G-d and prayers out of school due to some booschidt about separation of church and state. Yeah. We do need to shut down Publick Screwals. They are definitely too “politicized.”
Everyday is USA Day. No need to have a single day. I bet no one on this site had such a thing going through school. Sure maybe Fourth of July day. But a day called USA day? Nope
I hear Venezuela, Iran and North Korea are pretty lovely this time of year, too.
But not a whole lot of common sense, apparently.
From the article: “decision, saying it was not open for debate”
Welcome to “our democracy”.
Lol.
Good thing 4th of July is celebrated in the summer when school is out of session.
Our daughter gets picked-up every morning by her best friend at private High School that costs 600 euros a month in a chauffeur driven car. Whose parents are BOTH Netflix Executive Producers.
She then takes the train and bus home because they have some different class schedules at the end of the day. Often they have girlfriends sleep overs. Like with her recent Birthday Party.
Under any other admin. public funds would immediately be withdrawn from the school and the principal fired.
When is the next Drag Show?
... I had a day like that in school. Not high school, but elementary school in the 1990’s.
I don’t remember what it was called, but I do remember donning red, white and blue for it.
Massachusetts sucks so much.
Here is relevant Mass General Law, regarding what MUST occur every single day in schools:
MGL Chapter 71 §69:
Section 69. The school committee shall provide for each schoolhouse under its control, which is not otherwise supplied, flags of the United States of silk or bunting not less than two feet long, such flags or bunting to be manufactured in the United States, and suitable apparatus for their display as hereinafter provided. A flag shall be displayed, weather permitting, on the school building or grounds on every school day and on every legal holiday or day proclaimed by the governor or the President of the United States for especial observance; provided, that on stormy school days, it shall be displayed inside the building. A flag shall be displayed in each assembly hall or other room in each such schoolhouse where the opening exercises on each school day are held. Each teacher at the commencement of the first class of each day in all grades in all public schools shall lead the class in a group recitation of the ''Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag''. A flag shall be displayed in each classroom in each such schoolhouse. Failure for a period of five consecutive days by the principal or teacher in charge of a school equipped as aforesaid to display the flag as above required, or failure for a period of two consecutive weeks by a teacher to salute the flag and recite said pledge as aforesaid, or to cause the pupils under his charge so to do, shall be punished for every such period by a fine of not more than five dollars. Failure of the committee to equip a school as herein provided shall subject the members thereof to a like penalty.
This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
𝘍𝘪𝘵𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘍𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘺 seems like a bad idea, wouldn’t want to trigger the fat kids, I mean, body positive students and teachers.
The invasion is real. Demography is destiny.
