Showdown in Florida (Trump Trial)
Declassified with Julie Kelly ^ | 29 Feb, 2024 | Julie Kelly

As the special counsel's J6 case against Donald Trump in Washington implodes, things are heating up in the classified documents in Florida.

It wasn’t supposed to be this way.

All the activity and drama surrounding Special Counsel Jack Smith’s two criminal indictments against Donald Trump was slated to begin in the nation’s capital this week. In preparation for the history-making trial originally set for March 4 on Smith’s four-count indictment against Trump for January 6 and alleged efforts to “overturn” the 2020 election, journalists from around the world would have descended on Washington to cover every moment.

Protesters on both sides would have staked their ground outside the E. Barrett Prettyman courthouse just a few blocks from the U.S. Capitol with political tension at an all-time high. Trump’s long-time legal tormentors including Andrew Weissmann and Peter Strzok would have shed tears of joy during cable news appearances at the thought of finally seeing Trump enter a federal courtroom to face near-certain conviction in the most Democratic city in the country.

But official Washington and the national news media instead are shedding tears of anguish and rage after the Supreme Court announced on Wednesday it would consider Trump’s request to review lower court rulings that rejected his claims of presidential immunity from criminal prosecution; oral arguments are set for the week of April 22, around the same time the DOJ anticipated Trump’s J6 trial in Washington would be wrapping up. The SCOTUS schedule also serves as a continued hold on the pretrial proceedings. (I explain it all here.)

So rather than prepare to cover Trump’s first criminal trial within the friendly confines of the nation’s capital, downcast reporters are in the Sunshine State to cover what should be a barnburner of a hearing in Judge Aileen Cannon’s courtroom on Friday in the classified documents case.

Sunshine is the Best Disinfectant

Trump faces more than three dozen counts for illegally retaining national defense information and obstructing justice in Smith’s other indictment against the former president. But both the judge and potential jury pool in southern Florida represent more hostile territory for the special counsel’s office. In fact, Cannon first earned the ire of the news media and Weissmann-types after she appointed a third party to handle sensitive materials seized at Mar-a-Lago during the FBI’s August 2022 raid. Cannon at the time criticized the DOJ for leaking information to the media and the FBI’s mishandling of privileged records after the raid....

If these cases stretch beyond the election, the prosecutors will drop them. The only purpose is election interference.

Don’t agree. They will continue this at all costs. Their hatred for him runs that deep.

Perhaps. They could have gone after Trump for several years, but they didn't until he declared he was running again. They certainly hate him so they could try to destroy his presidential legacy.

Can someone summarize what exactly is happening in Florida and why “it wasn’t supposed to be this way”. I think the reporter forgot to include those details.

No doubt they hate him - but that’s not the point.

These cases have no merit - they were never designed to survive the appeal process - they were designed for election interference.

The very most the Trump haters hoped for were a few jury convictions in rigged Democrat jurisdictions like DC - timed just right so that until a higher appellate court reverses them, he is technically a convicted felon prior to the election.

After the election these cases go away because - win or lose - We The People will have rendered our own verdict.

“If these cases stretch beyond the election, the prosecutors will drop them.”

When Trump wins in November, they will be made to drop them. Most abruptly I imagine.

The majority of the electorate now understands that the institutions of government are no longer, if ever they were, the free, fair, and impartial arbiters of fact; where all who were made to endure them could expect, at minimum, a level playing field that consisted of honor and decency.

We now see that the courts and the attorneys who both prosecute and defend within them, use our systems as a Charnel house to torment, bankrupt and humiliate any who dare to stand up to our government and its endless vectors of power-grabbing, harassment and the unending pick-pocketing of the citizenry.

I’m fine with our police overall, but am very much open to re-imagining our justice system.

Why is Jack Smith still the Special Counsel? He was outed as having been illegally appointed months ago.

Yes, they need to "send a message" that the Left should never be challenged, ever.

Is it all journalists or just conservative journalists who can’t seem to get the the lede until they’ve written at least 8 paragraphs about something else?

They know when (fingers crossed and in prayer) Trump wins in November all cases disappear.

I’m worried about their Plan “B” or “C” that I’m sure they have in place should their lawfare cases continue to crumble.

Meanwhile, In other legal news, JUST IN: The D.C. Circuit has ruled that some Jan. 6 defendants had their sentences improperly lengthened by district judges’ decisions to label their crimes “interference with the administration of justice.”

Link to the court’s order here:

There hasn’t been an article written up on the ruling yet since the opinion has just been filed. I’m sure Julie Kelly will address the ruling once she has had an opportunity to dissect it.

I do support the concept that a President can be prosecuted for crimes committed while in office. So, when does Biden’s trial begin?

Sadly, the Deep State will NOT allow him to retake the WH, and they WILL stop him — “by any means necessary”.

Sure hope I’m wrong.

Thank you for sharing that! Yes, SCOTUS has it’s work cut out for them this year. I fear that maintaining their integrity and fidelity to the law will be an increasingly difficult endeavor as these cases mount and consume more and more of the court’s time.

As difficult as it will be, it is not of Trump’s doing, but that of a politically-spastic DOJ and DC Circuit.
