Six inmates at a New York prison are so eager to catch next week’s solar eclipse that they’re suing their lockup, claiming the rare spectacle is a “religious event” that they should be allowed to see.
The prisoners at Woodbourne Correctional Facility argue the April 8 phenomenon — in which the Moon will pass between the Sun and the Earth, immersing part of the state in darkness in the middle of the afternoon — should “warrant gathering, celebration, worship, and prayer,” their federal lawsuit states.
The men include a Baptist, a Muslim, a Seventh-Day Adventist, two practitioners of Santeria and even one atheist — who have all “expressed a sincerely held religious belief that April’s solar eclipse is a religious event that they must witness and reflect on to observe their faiths,” according to the suit filed Friday.
But state correction officials have planned a lockdown during the astronomical marvel, in a move that would breach the inmates’ constitutional rights to practice their religions, the suit alleges.

The world is acting so panicky and dramatic about the eclipse. It isn’t religious. But the state is being childish. Let the convicts see it and maybe enjoy it. Just act like it’s night time for 4 minutes. Hell, maybe one of those spuds will get introspective.
They are all going to be walking the street again someday. The less gratuitous contempt they are shown in prison the better for us when they hit the streets again someday.
They’re locking down prisons for an eclipse?! How odd. And several states along its path have declared a state of emergency. Hmmm.
It’s modern extremist government. EVERYTHING is a dire menace requiring mobilization and activating emergency procedures.
No. There is nothing in Christianity requiring anyone to watch this.
Yeah.
It’s weird how panicky they are being.
Almost like they have something planned.
But if they don’t, it speaks to magical thinking and neopaganist mentality.
It looks like this prison is well outside the path of totality. I agree, let them out in the yard to watch the partial eclipse if they want to. As for taking them on some sort of excursion to see the total eclipse, forget it. I’m sure it’ll be on TV.
I hope it’s cloudy ☁️ that day
What did you not understand about “LOCKDOWN”?
As I understand they have restricted rights to the extent that they are allowed to have them, the only unalterable rights are to eat, breathe, personal hygiene and a place to sleep and obviously health to the extent possible.
How about the religious rights of victims to keep these law breakers locked up for the duration of their sentence.

When are they going to figure out to simply claim their religion requires them to commit crime?
I got:
“Link doesn’t exist on this server”
Just FYI.
Just lock them in a dark closet for ten minutes and call it good.
Atheists have ‘religious beliefs’?
give em a TV to watch it-
