Why would anyone drink Corona beer?

It's an import, a Scottish ale, from Belhaven brewery, an old brewery in Dunbar Scotland - been around since at least the 18th century. We started drinking it when it had to be specially imported by a local "beer pub" . . . now you can buy it in the Publix supermarket, for heaven's sake.

I want to try it. Then I can send a little money back over to Scotland where a lot of my ancestors came from.

There are a LOT more of us Scots over here than back over there. They left when there wasn't any way to make a living (like most of my Scottish ancestors, who were honest tradesmen - shoemakers, carriage makers, and the like, seeking to better themselves) . . . on the other hand, one of my ancestors (the one in the direct male line to my maiden name) was a MacGregor, the Sopranos of Scotland. He left Scotland under a cloud and one jump ahead of the sheriff and changed his name when he got here.

It must be from him I get my taste for Scottish ale -- but hopefully not his cattle-stealing propensities. The MacGregors were a bad lot.

Most of mine were hard working souls who came here for jobs and to get away from the Crown.

One however, was apparently a Green Back, he probably sneaked across the Canadian border in the late 1800's. He avoided a paper trail until he died. Even that provided no clues to where he came from.

I had an elusive ancestor that I knew had come from somewhere in England and was living in South Carolina when his first wife (not my ancestor) died.

I eventually tracked him down -- he is buried in Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Rome GA - less than 50 yards from our family plot . . . the thought that he had been there all along, just quietly resting, while I was hunting all over SC, Alabama, and London for him, makes me laugh. His will was still in the vault at the Probate Court too -- and as wills go it is highly amusing to read. He was a freethinker which probably scandalized his good Baptist second wife.

I hope he thinks the whole thing's funny too.

Genealogy is one of my past times. I have spent an inordinate amount of time trying to locate this ancestor, who was my father's dad. My dad refused to talk about him and apparently disliked him. My Dad died in 1976, and I started my genealogy quest after he died. He was the last of the relatives. Many if not most of the lines, I have tracked back to the 1700's and some even further.

Oh, I'm a genealogist too. Gosh, it's hard when you have a "black sheep" and the family won't talk about him.

We had a similar situation with my grandfather-in-law's daddy. But he really WAS a horrid guy. My g-i-l's mother died giving birth to him, and his daddy blamed HIM for her death (like he could help it). Abused him and threw him out of the house at age 11 - he walked all the way to some cousins who took him in. He fortunately didn't turn to a life of crime, but became a Methodist minister instead. He told my husband that it took him many, many years to forgive his dad -

We were still able to get the info, though it took us awhile.

"Because life is too short to drink cheap beer" Actually, I've been scoring on it for about $6 a 6 pack - beats the price of Sam by a buck and half, and is better too.

Lately, I've been drinking cheaper beer. Upper Canada Lager.(Might only be in Michigan) $7.99 a 12 pack, with a $2.50 rebate. Can't complain there, and it's not that bad. Somewhat similar to Labatt's.

I thought I heard, and correct me if I'm wrong, that the whole "lime" thing with corona actually had its origins in the fact that Mexicans used cut limes to clean rat crap form the bottle tops. Unclean conditions. Some Lib visiting Mexico, wanting to be all multi-cultural and all, decided to imitate. It caught on.

Plus, doesn't Corona specifically have the skunk taste as a result of the fact that it is bottled in clear glass, which is a big no no?

As I recall, when you're that age, Red White and Blue will do. Of course, at DU, they fear anything that might be construed as patriotism, so Milw.'s Beast is likely the drink of the day.

St Pauli's is/was good. Don't see it around much anymore. What are some good German beers that get imported here?
