Will Cubin run again? (Wyoming)
The Jackson Hole Star-Tribune ^ | April 1, 2007 | NOELLE STRAUB

Rep. Barbara Cubin, R-Wyo., has begun fundraising for 2008 but has not yet publicly said whether she will run for re-election, although one challenger has already announced his campaign.

"She is raising money," said Cubin spokeswoman Alison McGuire. "It's way too early to be focusing on the campaign right now, but she'll be making an announcement at the appropriate time."

That time would be much closer to the election, McGuire said, noting that Cubin has never started a campaign this early.

Cubin had a luncheon fundraiser last week at the Capitol Hill Club, a national social club for Republicans just blocks from the Capitol, McGuire said.

House Republican Leader John Boehner held a fundraiser for her about a month ago in Washington, McGuire said. Cubin has not held any fundraisers in Wyoming.

CONTACT BARBARA CUBIN, PLEAD WITH HER TO RETIRE!!!!

This is one case where the incumbent is among the weakest candidates the GOP could have.

No, her voting record is good, but she’s a poor campaigner who has missed several votes. Also, she almost lost reelection last year in an overwhelmingly Republican state.

If Dave Trauner couldn’t beat her in the best rodent year since 1974 with Dave Freudenthal at the top of the ticket, it’s not likely he’ll beat her in a rematch... BUT... she is a damaged candidate who ran far, far behind the GOP ticket and only won by HALF a percentage point (1,012 votes — the Libertarian alone received nearly 7,500). By comparison, Sen. Craig Thomas got 42,000 more votes than she did — almost 50% more votes than she received, which is completely inexcusable. Our best hope is to try to persuade former State Treasurer Cynthia Lummis into the race, though any of the sitting statewide GOP officeholders would be acceptable.

The list of vulnerable Republicans members was shown publicly during a hearing of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on alleged misconduct at the GSA. Committee Chairman Henry Waxman, D-Calif., said such a political briefing should not have happened at a federal agency.

Of course! Old Nostrilitis believes that federal agencies are for launching partisan witch hunts against Republicans.

The primaries are the place where you get the unsatisfactory congresscritters unseated. I hope that the good people of Wyoming will find able candidates for the job. Best wishes!

With a snout like his, I always expected that little turd to be out in the woods hunting for truffles.

A lot of Republicans in Wyoming wish she’d retire. She is a perennially weak candidate, under-performing the ticket and squeaking by. Plus, we need a stronger person in that position who could hopefully move up when a Senator retires. I don’t think she could.

Well, I mentioned Cynthia Lummis. Can you think of someone you’d personally prefer to replace Cubin ?

I have a very favorable impression of Lummis, but must confess I don’t know her stands on all the issues. She’s won statewide races and couldn’t be a worse draw than Cubin.

What’s former Governor Gehringer up to these days?

Last I read, he was director of policy and public sector strategies at the Environmental Systems Research Institute. I was a bit disappointed that he wasn’t able to hand off his office to a fellow Republican. I understand also he’s a bit of a semi-squish on a few issues (environmentalism & pro-ERA), and he’d turn 65 shortly after taking office (rather pushing it for someone embarking on a DC career).

I was thinking about Ray Hunkins, who many believed would’ve beaten Freudenthal in ‘02. He was the nominee last November, but lost horribly (in fact, it was such a dreadful loss that he had the distinction of scoring the single lowest percentage of the vote for a major party candidate since statehood — 30%). Hunkins would also turn 70 shortly after the start of the ‘09 Congress, another negative.
