Rove Seeks Challenger to Landrieu
Political Wire ^ | May 23, 2007

Without fanfare or national media attention, White House strategist Karl Rove went to Louisiana the weekend before last to woo State Treasurer John Kennedy (D) to the GOP and into the 2008 Senate race against Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA).

Republican insiders see Landrieu as the most vulnerable Democratic senator up for reelection next year, but with none of the GOP members of the Congressional delegation stepping up to the plate, party strategists are looking elsewhere. Kennedy has good poll numbers statewide and would be a formidable challenger to the Senator.

But it is far from clear that the state Treasurer is all that close to making either jump -- to the Republican Party or into the Senate contest. And some in the state think that, given the President's current standing and the party's showing in the 2006 midterm elections, Rove may no longer be the best person to make the appeal to Kennedy.

Rove would be of better service if he could slap a few conservatives back into line.

Right now, the only Republican who seems to be considering it is Suzanne Haik Terrell, who nearly won in 2002.

It would be an interesting development if Kennedy did run as a Republican. Could you imagine a Republican named John Kennedy in the U.S. Senate?

Too bad Kennedy’s middle name is Neely. Kennedy seems more DINO than anything else. He’s worked under both Gov. Roemer and Gov. Foster. If they feel he has a better shot at taking out Landrieu, they should run him. Still, I’d pay good money to see a Republican Sen. John Kennedy in the Senate, as Teddy would probably drop dead from a stroke (pun unintended).

I had read that Woody Jenkins plans to make a fourth bid for the Senate, but apparently not.

Kennedy would be a much stronger candidate.

But would Kennedy be any better than Landrieu?

Good question. Hard to predict these days. After all, who thought people like Saxby Chambliss, Jon Kyl, and Mike Enzi would jump the shark in the Senate ?
