More on That Anti-Romney Iowa TV ad
ABC News ^ | December 23, 2007 | Jake Tapper

Posted on 12/23/2007 12:09:56 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

As we reported on the blog yesterday, a group calling itself American Right to Life Action, is running TV ads against Mitt Romney here in Iowa on the Fox News Channel.

In Tuftonboro, N.H., Romney said about the ad, from ABC News' Matt Stuart, "I don't know who that is. I'd be interested to know who is really behind that group. I'm very proud that the Massachusetts Citizens for Life, which is the premier right-to-life group in Massachusetts, awarded me their leadership award. My record in being pro-life is very clear as the governor of Massachusetts and my guess is that there is some group that is pulling for another candidate and is trying to find some way to go after me and that is just the nature of politics."

Just got off the phone with Steve Curtis -- former chair of the Colorado Republican party -- who's the president of American Right to Life Action. He says the organization is not supporting any candidate, though his personal preference would be for Alan Keyes. He doesn't particularly like Mike Huckabee, either, he says. Or, obviously, Rudy Giuliani. He has no views of Fred Thompson other than he enjoyed his work on "Law & Order."

The group was formed in November during a summit in Denver with about 30 different anti-abortion leaders who are dissatisfied with the National Right to Life Committee. "Most of what they do isn't pro-life," Curtis says. He believes NRLC's push to pursue restrictions on abortion rights -- waiting periods, for example -- is a flawed policy.

"They're too political and not serious enough about the issue of abortion," Curtis says. "They support child-killing regulation bills." Curtis says "so long as the legislation ends with 'then you can kill a baby'" he thinks such restrictions are pro-abortion.

What does his group have against Mitt Romney? The former Massachusetts governor says he's changed his mind and now opposes abortion rights just like President Ronald Reagan and former Rep. Henry Hyde, R-Ill -- what's wrong with that explanation?

"The problem is he keeps changing back," Curtis says. "He flips and flops. What he says on the issue depends on where he's at and who he's talking to. We just flat-out don't believe the guy."

Curtis says the anti-Romney ad ran 192 times here on Fox News Channel in Iowa, at a cost of $12,000. They may triple that ad buy.

Since they are attacking Romney, I’m guessing they’ll get a pass from the Fred supporters for denigrating the National Right to Life committee. Since NRTL endorsed Thompson, pretty much anything bad said about them has been used as proof of liberalness or worse.

BTW, I’m guessing if they formed because NRTL wasn’t pro-life enough for them, they probably are dissappointed in most of our candidates, including Romney.

A lot of our “pro-life” candidates support abortion for rape and incest, after all. The NRTL will give their endorsement to candidates who support killing babies beause of the sins of their father, but I bet this new group doesn’t.

But since they don’t really like Huckabee, I’m guessing that leaves them few choices. Alan Keyes, Duncan Hunter?

Are you a professional sh*t-stirrer or just a promising amateur? I'd love to know which campaign you actually work for.

Would you like to tell us what about the ad is untrue?

Character matters...and not just for Democratic candidates. And, Romney has no character.

It's shameful we actually have "conservatives" supporting such a liar.

It's the Romney Sleaze Machine Prime Directive in action: don't address the message, attack--or in this case impugn--the messenger.

I can certainly see why Willard’s negatives are as high as Hillary’s.

Can you really imagine this bunch in the White House?

        HEEHAW, HEEHAW
Hey mom...what's for super? Pedro is back. He slipped over the border  yesterday, do you think we can get Maria to cook up some her fine tacos?

I would rather vote for a Democrat than that....more government involvement...amnesty pushing... foreign affairs ignorant......Bush bashing....high taxing....parole giving...credential lying.....preacher hick from Arkansas. That's about it (sure I missed something)

Karl Rove might be right when he said to get ready for a Democratic era in the White House.  A vote for Huckabee is a vote for a Democrat, no matter which party wins.

Giuliani  = Liberal

Has our Party gone the way of the dinosaurs?
Have we lost our values?

If we elect a man who supports gay rights and is pro-choice, we can no longer call ourselves conservative.  Have we sunk so low that we would elect a person who dresses in drag?  Marches in gay pride parades?   Giuliani is a liberal running as a conservative.  He's pro-amnesty, pro-gun control, and pro-gay.  He is intelligent and has governed New York City successfully, BUT he is not a true conservative by any measure.  Conservatives wake up?
God help us if we elect a liberal
.

That's a fair question.

What a refreshing statement in the political sphere.

I’m supporting Mitt Romney. I collected signatures for Mitt Romney, and for Fred Thompson, to get on the ballot in Virginia. I sent money to Fred Thompson, and to Duncan Hunter.

I read up on all the candidates, and when asked, provide that information. When I find Huckabee supporters, I tell them there are questions they need to ask, and tell them where to get the answers. When I find people attacking Fred or Mitt, I explain why they are wrong.

That’s about all I have time for. I am on the republican committee, so I work for all our republican candidates in the general election, putting up signs, phone banking, etc., but we aren’t there yet.

Unfortunately, I haven’t found anybody willing to pay me. ;-)

Actually, I’m not looking for that kind of pressure.

When it was noted a month ago that the NRTL did not represent the most pure of the pro-life supporters, that idea was attacked. Well, here is the group that proves that point.

You are wrong. I’d say more, but I can’t know for certain that you deliberately lied about me, or are simply delusional.

What’s there to refute? I could put out an ad that notes that Fred Thompson was the reason CFR passed, so when he now claims he thinks it was wrong, I just can’t trust him.

What could he say back? It’s true that he supported CFR, he spoke for it, he voted for it, he was the reason it passed the Senate. All he could say is that I was wrong not to trust him now. But what kind of response would that be?

Romney has already “responded”, because he has stated his position, and his position is a refutation of ad’s warning that Romney won’t be pro-life.

Romney will be as pro-life as Fred Thompson, probably a little more. But if they want to not trust him, that’s not something that can be “refuted”.
