So Many GOP Contenders for One Kansas Seat
Congressional Quarterly ^ | December 3, 2009 | Shira Toeplitz

“This is the opportunity that pretty much all of these people have labored in the vineyards for years to bring to fruition,” Kensinger said. “And the spirit around them is pretty good.”

Former state Sen. Nick Jordan, who lost to Moore by 16 points in 2008, was in a good position to hit the ground running after Moore’s announcement. He said he had been actively considering another run against Moore for the past two months and was boosted by a poll paid for by some of his donors that showed him with a strong name identification in the 3rd District compared to other GOP candidates looking at the race.

“One of the advantages we already have is that we already have the infrastructure all in place,” Jordan said in a phone interview.

Two other former Moore opponents, state Sen. Jeff Colyer and attorney Greg Musil, who ran in 2002 and 2000, respectively, are also considering bids. Another candidate who had previously been considering a bid against Moore this cycle, state Rep. Kevin Yoder, filed an exploratory committee on the day of Moore’s announcement, and soon after state Rep. Pat Colloton and former state Sen. Mark Gilstrap followed suit.

More Republicans, including state Sen. Karin Brownlee, former Johnson County Commissioner candidate Charlotte O’Hara and Olathe Mayor Mike Copeland, are also said to be looking at the race. Former state Rep. Patricia Lightner, who ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination in 2004, was already in the race before Moore announced his retirement.

I’m not hugely well-informed about this race, but it seems to be that Nick Jordan and Kevin Yoder are the best prospects for success.

They need to be watched closely. The SOS in Ohio is running for the U.S. Senate.

I supported Nick in 2008 and got to know him. He’s a good guy but I’m not ready to jump on board his bus yet. I want to see who else in the district runs. I have heard a lot of good things about Kevin Yoder. Pat Lightner seems to be the leader right now.

Its a wait and see. But glad to see Dennis gone.

The rats have not declared anybody yet but I would expect Carol Mernvioch and the current KCK mayor to run.

Nick Jordan lost to Moore by 16 points in 2008. Yoder is the more moderate of the two. You can't count out Jeff Colyer or Pat Lightner or any of the other conservatives who are either in the race or making noises about running. With half a dozen conservatives on the ballot there's no telling who will wind up on top when the dust settles.

Still don't know who the Democrats will run. I expect their candidate will announce after the holidays.

What about Patricia Lightner? I remember when she ran unsuccesfully in the primary a few years ago that many saw her as the rare Republican that was acceptable to both conservatives and RINOs in that polarized district.

Post #5, FReeper ncfool believes Lightner to be one of the leaders in the race so far.

But I didn’t say that I supported her! I didn’t support her in the past she will have to prove herself to me.

What’s important here is not putting up another RINO liberal.

You have to have somebody who can run against a Wyandotte County Democrat like Joe Reardon or Carol Marinovich who might be tough to beat as they have a good following.

mr. fm-dj,
we need directional guidance in the nutmeg state.

Do we focus on CT-4, ct-5, or defeating Simmons for Senate?
Remember, one guy can only be in one place and I wanna keep my team with me.

I think I’m gonna be working the eastern part of CT-4 this month. So I am answering my own question.

There is another GOP candidate in that Kansas 3d District race whose name isn't mentioned in the article. That would be John Rasavy. His web site is:

http://jrforcongress.com

Mr. Rasavy himself called the Mark Levin Show the other day and briefly introduced himself to the audience.

Wonder why this CQ gal who wrote the posted article is neglecting him. Because he's the most conservative, perhaps? BTW, if I read the article correctly, she didn't even mention by number the district she was talking about.

The 'Rats' Soros-funded "SOS Project" often flies under the radar, unfortunately, though it's extremely important. The National Review article about it that you linked to is excellent, but it's at best tangentially related to this thread, so it should be the subject for another FR thread.

We have to focus on EVERY potentially winnable race, not just one. If we’re serious about winning the majority, we have to go after everything.

I’ve met JR. Nice guy but does not have much political experience and didn’t seem to have any funding behind him.

Only time will tell as we see who shows up for the primary next August. I hope its not a slugfest that destroys party unity.

Sorry for the errors and confusion. Post # 18 should read: "Correction to my post #15..."
