The next Ron Paul, and/or the anti-Palin (Politico at it, again!)
The Politico ^ | November 5, 2010 | Ben Smith

Posted on 11/05/2010 10:01:48 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Ben Birnbaum writes that former New Mexico Gary Johnson looks set to inherit the small, entertaining Republican primary space occupied by Ron Paul.

He also seems set to occupy another space: The anti-Palin. There's a substantial minority of Republicans who don't like her, and with the rest of the field terrified of giving offense, it's a niche that will get him attention and some fans:

What does Johnson make of Palin? On a drive through the foothills of New Hampshire, I ask him. Riding shotgun, he turns the question around on me. “Um, I guess some people think she’s folksy,” I say from the backseat.

“Well, at first she strikes you as folksy,” he shoots back. “And then you realize: She might be running for president of the United States! And then, don’t we have the obligation to tell her what a terrible idea that is?”

Nonsense. Reagan barely lost the nomination in ‘76 to incumbent Gerry Ford, and in 1980 got over 50% of votes in a race that had a strong 3rd part contender. This whole meme about Reagan’s unpopularity is a myth. It wasn’t until after he was elected that his popularity took a dive. In November of 82, Reagan’s job disapproval rating was 47%, the same as Obama’s is today.

You’e right, of course, but I don’t have time today to find the information for you.

I am busy with the FReepaton. Al B posted a poll about RWR and Carter. If I have time I will try to find it.

Harris Poll January 29, 1980:

CARTER NOW FAR AHEAD OF BOTH REAGAN AND BUSH

"President Carter so dominates the American political scene now that his margin over Ronald Reagan in a post-Iowa trial heat has risen to an overwhelming 65-31 percent."

Also, Time magazine ran a big story in March of that year basically saying Reagan was unelectable. Gallup had a poll in that time frame with Reagan down 25 points.

Being down in the polls doesn’t equate to being unelectable (despite what you believe from Time Magazine), unfavorables do.

and support in the primaries for O’Donnell, McMahon, Angle, Whitman, and Miller cost the Rs the Senate.

I don't know where you are grabbing your political information.

Palin did not support Angle or Whitman in the primaries, nor McMahon as far as I know, she did not support Whitman in the general either.

Palin did give us quite a group of winners, I am confused by how Joe Miller costs us the Senate though, either he wins and things improve, or Murkowski wins and things stay the same, the democrat is not in the running.

Really, in your list you only have O'Donnell and Miller, Jim DeMint also endorsed O'Donnell, and Bob Dole, and Mitt Romney, endorsed her for the general, Senator Lamar Alexander campaigned for her. Joe Miller got endorsements from Senators Jim Inholfe, John McCain, Mitch McConnell, NRSC Chairman John Cornyn

Space Cadet? Boy, your first relex is to take the low road isn’t it? Let’s get back to specifics. Please provide examples of where Palin reduced the size of government in these positions.

Stormer,

You want to revise your earlier comments or just keep blathering about something you know nothing about?

For someone whose posted opinions about Palin, much like the one on this thread, are mostly snarking unobjective, and lacking in facts, that statement of yours is equal parts laughable and hypocritical.

Other than being a conservative Palin has nothing in common with Reagan. She doesn’t compare to him at all.

She’s the current conservative darling and unelectable. She deserves much praise, but she’ll lose a presidential run against Obama or Hilary.

Remember Gore almost beat Bush. You have to think match up because that’s how the voters think. They simply compare two products.

There is a difference between having strong opinions, and focusing on the arguments of an opponent, and pounding fists on the table and calling names. Heck, I never took the debate but even I realize that.
