Why I Am Done Defending Herman Cain
US News and World Report ^ | November 11, 2011 | Mary Kate Cary, former Bush 41 speechwriter

Posted on 11/13/2011 3:07:51 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

People have been asking me all week if conservatives will stick with Herman Cain, but I think he's got a bigger problem than the conservative vote. A lot more women than conservatives vote, and the women I've talked to are finished with him.

There's a new CBS poll which says that 38 percent of female Republican primary voters are "less likely to back him" now that more accusers have come forward. Among all registered voters, CBS reports that Cain has lost support among women since last month—from 28 percent in October to 15 percent now. My sense is that 15 percent of female registered voters remaining as Cain supporters may be a little high, because the poll was conducted before Cain's attorney started threatening any other potential accusers with the notion that they'd better "think twice" before coming forward.

This whole thing is a shame, because so many of us liked Herman Cain's ideas and business experience. I've been defending him for the last few weeks as he spoke out against the anonymous and vague charges. But they're not anonymous and vague anymore. There are faces, and names, and ugly stories to match. As Kathleen Parker put it, three accusers is a trend. Four is a tipping point.

Women who have worked in politics have seen his type before—casual with staff, jocular, kind of schmoozy. Fun at first, but then it becomes clear that they don't think the rules apply to them. After a while, there's an arrogance that sets in. Washington is full of bosses like that. I've worked for several.

Women don't like to talk about being sexually harassed because it's embarrassing. Life moves on and most of us would rather put bad incidents behind us. So for busy women—at least one of the accusers is a single mom with a teenage son—to come forward years later isn't easy. The fact that they're contemplating doing a joint press conference says to me they realize how high the stakes are, after they saw how Sharon Bialek's personal finances and work history were trashed. Safety in numbers.

These accusers who have come forward are about my age, and they seem very credible to me. They're not selling their stories to tabloids. They're not random women from all over the country, like some of former President Bill Clinton's accusers were. They all worked with Herman Cain specifically when he was at the Restaurant Association. They seem believable to me, and right now, he does not. I'm not defending him anymore.

I think as it becomes more apparent that these were false claims, without any provable basis in fact, by some women who “have a history”, many conservative women will come back.

Someone needs to say, when sexual harassment claims turn in to a tool for revenge, or political weapons, this marginalized the plight of women who are truly being harassed. Those who have been victimized in the past should be the first to see the importance of not demeaning the issue for political reasons.

Pish tosh!

Here is a recent picture of me and Mr. Cain. I did not at all feel intimidated.

Get over your bitterness...

How ironic you who never has anything positive to ad to the discussion would be giving such advice.

I'm positive both that I can spell "add" and that you should go take a bite out of crime.

Have a fine day and don't bite anything that has mold on it.

That does not justify anything yet...

Why are all the complainants from Chicago? Why do at least two of them know those associated with Obama? Others seems to be reticent to come forward... Why?

There weren't even four woman with dubious claims. There where two with claims and two with outright rumor. One said I thought about filing a grievance but didn't and one claims an outlandish story about a midnight ride in DC.

If this is as easy as it gets to get rid of a Conservative, we have real trouble.

I’m not so sure. Women who truly have experienced this know a fraud when they see one. Women like this cheapen those who really have suffered. It’s kind of like “racism”. It now means anything anyone says it means. I don’t know how this will all shake out. People are working overtime trying to make Cain sink. Considering the press, the push polls, etc. I’m amazed he’s still in first place. I hope he weathers this. I’m so sick of this happening to good men and better candidates, those really capable of getting the country back on track. Sometimes I think about this situation and I get so discouraged. As a woman, it really bothers me that we’ve become so jaded that every single time a woman cries harassment we (by having been born with the same gender specific equipment) are supposed to automatically rally around her regardless how truly unbelievable her claim is. If they manage to take Cain down there’s no way we’re going to be able to avoid a Romney nomination. If they can make completely false claims stick to a truly good man, imagine what they’ll do to Gingrich? We know his history. We know some of the accusations against him are false. However, he’s got just enough “there” there he’ll never overcome his baggage. It will be worse than Cain.

Newt would eviscerate Obama in a debate. Obama would be jawboned into at least a few 3 hour Lincoln/Douglas style debates and Newt will wipe the floor with him.

As for his previous problems, they are known. He doesn't have the albatross of a depression on his hands, Obama does.

Yes, still wavering about these accusations! BUT, if I look at who and what the accusers are, it is very easy to have doubts.

Doubts?

Do you even know what the accusations are?

If you do, you should let everybody else know because all we know is that some women say he did/said something to them, but the won't tell us what it is he did.

And the one Krackshower or whatever her name is alleges that he stiffed her for dinner. She's not even alleging anything sexual.

Or do you prefer fact-free allegations to keep your mind uncluttered?

How am I “bitter” because I’m disappointed in the current crop of GOP candidates? Who is “humblegunner” supporting?

I’m Sorry, but this is why Democrats always win! They get the MSM to go along with unproven smears and the sheeple go along and repeat their accusations.

You all ought to be ashamed! Do any of you have any links to proof that this happened? Are you only justifying your actions based on unproven media accusations?

This has happened again and again in the media. Not sure why it still resonates so well with those that know that the media lies or implies what it can NOT prove.

When things are actually clear, then I will make a decision, I suggest that you folks do the same...
