Obama’s re-election and other perilous predictions for 2012 (Huckabee will be Milt's VP pick?)
The Globe and Mail ^ | January 8, 2012 | Andrew Steele

Predictions in politics and government are a fool’s game. The systems involved are chaotic and complex. The players change motive or exit the game unexpectedly. Choices are made for reasons that are often hidden, illogical or against one’s own self interest.

Despite this, last year I went out on a limb with 10 perilous predictions for 2011.

Surprisingly, eight of the ten guesses are generally correct, albeit some achieving the predicted result in different ways than envisaged. For instance, Stephen Harper did get his majority, but at the expense of the Liberals, rather than through NDP losses.

Gas prices failed to rise. China is certainly more wobbly than a year ago, but Beijing is managing to contain the evidence of that better than expected. And the biggest story of the year – the collapse of multiple Middle Eastern dictatorships – wasn’t on my radar at all.

It is incredibly unlikely that my guesses will be as reliable for 2012, but here goes anyway. Some of these are comfortable picks (Romney, Redford, polarization) while others are long-shots (Huckabee, Iran) or tough calls (Obama, Europe.)

1. Mitt Romney will be the Republican nominee

The post-caucus coverage from Iowa seems to say Mitt Romney had a bad day, when the opposite is true.

The Iowa caucus is only worth a total of 25 delegates for the Republican nomination, and winning it is essentially meaningless in predicting the nominee. What it does is serve to winnow the field of its pretenders. With a fifth-place finish, Rick Perry is seriously damaged, and throwing everything into South Carolina. A fourth-place finish robbed Newt Gingrich of his momentum and leaves him in the race essentially as an anti-Romney spoiler. Ron Paul is not viable....

Your obvious inability to spell "Mitt" correctly may be indicative of some mental disorder.

It wouldn’t be surprising. Mitt has had a very hard time getting through to Evangelicals. Huckabee would be the perfect choice if, God forbid, Mitt wins the nomination.

Huckabee is a brilliant snake oil salesman, perfect for making the Evangelical rounds. But he is also a corrupt, liberal opportunist, so Romney would find him easy to work with.

And to top it all off, both of them seem to have a thing about torturing dogs.

If it is Mitt and Huck then I’ll be staying home during the election.
I’m NOT going to support crappola once again foisted upon us by the republican “elite”.
Real conservative or go fish.

I was seriously hoping Willard was going to pick McCain for VP.
Then the press might give him a hard time like he is the real Presidential candidate as per Palin.

A lot could happen between now and election time. For instance the media will start taking all the curruption coming out of this admin seriously but I wouldnt hold my breath.

I believe team Gingrich/Santorum or Santorum/Gingrich, however they worked it out will take Rombot out.
Yes, I believe they have something worked out in advance.

I have always worried that he would use his 2008 National Campaign Chairman as his ace in the hole, Senator Jim DeMint.

I think Mitt will pick Hillary as his VP running mate.

Vice-President Huckaphony? I don’t think so. A 2008 retread loser brings nothing to Romney’s campaign. Nominate Marco Rubio and you sew up Florida and the presidency with it.

Obama re-elected? Only in some Canadian columnists fantasy.

But an election is not a referendum on the president. It is a choice.

Really? Tell that to Carter and Bush I. As for the Huckster for VP, that is absurd. Huck HATES Milt. Just look at what he did to shaft him in the WV Primary. This writer is a dope.

I predict that arrogant Canadian journalists will continue to delude themselves that they understand American politics, based on their readings in the liberal media echo-chamber.
