If you read the above requirements, actually your Vietnam Vet friend would NOT qualify for the “free” Obama phone. That’s what’s so skewed about this “free” stuff the government offers. It all seems to be geared to those with children or those who are already getting some kind of assistance or the mentally impaired and/or addicted.

I have a friend who receives $850/mo social security and she still doesn’t qualify for food stamps, they told her she receives just $20 a month too much to qualify.

It’s all a huge scam.

Republican Congressman Tim Griffin (Arkansas) said he wants to end government issued cell phones to low-income and elderly individuals in an effort to stop rampant abuse of the program.

“Some people are getting two, three, four,10, 20, 30, 40 cell phones.” said Congressman Griffin.

He says a few years back the government extended the program to provide not just land lines, but cell phone service.

The congressman said the program is being abused and people are even selling the phones. “I have a four year old that goes to a school here in Little Rock. She came home with an advertisement for a free cell phone in her backpack.” said Congressman Griffin.

He says it is the Federal Universal Service Charge on your bill and goes into a fund regulated by the FCC.

“It started costing in the millions and now we’re close to a billion dollars a year.” said Congressman Griffin.

Uncle Sam’s Unlimited Plan: How the Government’s Cell Phone Giveaway Is Costing You Billions

http://griffin.house.gov/Lifeline

In 2008, the Lifeline Program was expanded to include wireless service providers. Between 2008 and 2009, non-landline costs for the program doubled – from $143 million to $384 million – and then doubled again, totaling over $719 million in 2010. Before the certification of the first wireless carrier, the overall Lifeline Program cost $822 million per year, an amount consistent with the previous five years. That number grew to $1.025 billion in 2009 and to $1.315 billion in 2010. According to the Federal Communications Commission, it is common for multiple wireless service providers to seek reimbursement for Lifeline services provided to the same household.

“And they’re not just phones that are able to dial 911. They’re smartphones. They’re the type of phones that you and I pay hundreds of dollars a month to have contracts for.”

Griffin said his constituents have told him about people abusing the government benefit.

“I had someone call me this morning telling me they had somebody who would only work a certain number of hours a week because if they worked too many hours a week then they couldn’t get their government assistance. And that person has multiple cell phones, and gets them new every month with new minutes,” he said, sounding outraged.

The cell phone companies add to the problem, he said.

“Every one they give out, they get money for from the federal government. So they have an incentive to give as many away as possible,” Griffin explained. “And that’s exactly what they’re doing, and they’re making a killing.”

A 2011 audit found that 269,000 wireless Lifeline subscribers were receiving free phones and monthly service from two or more carriers. Several websites have been created to promote “free” government cell phones, including the”The Obama Cell Phone” website at Obamaphone.net.
