It didn’t take long for the video of a screeching Mitt Romney protester (and 47-percenter poster star) in Ohio to go viral and for #ObamaPhone to trend on Twitter. The Obama campaign noticed it too, and you’d think they’d be quick to thank such a passionate supporter for her boots-on-the-ground help, but instead the campaign’s “Truth Team” has wasted no time disconnecting.

RB@RBPundit

It's interesting that Team Obama felt the need to "correct" the #ObamaPhone stuff. A confident campaign would have brushed it off.

27 Sep 12 Reply Retweet Favorite

But why? The woman said she’s voting Obama because the president gave her a free phone. Who’s to say he didn’t?

Obama’s Truth Team quickly tweeted out a link to FactCheck.org, which concludes that “Obama Phone” is a complete misnomer. FactCheck even manages to “blame Bush” for the program, noting that the SafeLink program, which provides free cell phones to qualifying applicants who receive food stamps, Medicaid or other federal benefits, “started under President George Bush.”

So, that free cell phone? Obama didn’t buy that. Mr. President, why don’t you want the poor to have cell phones?

Make no mistake about it 0bama is getting votes from this...

0bama Phone dot net

The pic on that page has been changed since yesterday. It had what looked like an 0bama campaign website with a pic of 0bama, his logo and all the other trappings.

I have seen the Obama phone web site a while back. Not sure if its still there.

They actually claim on the site that the phones are not paid for by tax payers (the small print justified this false statement by the hand waving argument that the tax is paid by telecommunication companies and so is not a tax on people).

Yes, that is the claim that telecom companies pay for it and that they are prohibited by law to pass that cost to customers. Isn’t that a laugh?

Today USF is an $8 billion annual program, nearly quadrupling in size since its inception, with the bulk of that increase going to landline and wireless phone companies.

Maybe this massive growth would be no concern if USF were a model program with a sterling reputation for efficiency. But it’s not. One recent study found that 59 cents of every USF dollar raised for rural networks was spent on administrative expenses and general overhead. A 2010 audit of the rural USF program found that one out of every four dollars sent to participating phone companies was an “overpayment,” with nearly a billion dollars unaccounted for.

The idea that this is some sort of private charity, that its not a government program, or that its not paid for though a charge (tax) to consumers is BS.

From the FCC's own website

-"Lifeline is a government benefit program"

Who Pays for the Lifeline Program?

All telecommunications service providers and certain other providers of telecommunications must contribute.... (PAY A TAX!!!!!)..... to the federal USF based on a percentage of their end-user telecommunications revenues. These companies include wireline telephone companies, wireless telephone companies, and certain Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) providers.

Some consumers may notice a “Universal Service” line item on their telephone bills. This line item appears when a company chooses to recover its USF contributions directly from its customers by billing them this charge. The FCC does not require this charge to be passed on to customers. ....(WE CHARGE A TAX TO THE PHONE COMPANY,IF THEY MAKE YOU PAY FOR IT-ITS NOT US TAXING YOU ITS THEM)... Each company makes a business decision about whether and how to assess charges to recover its Universal Service costs.

You better look at your phone bill, every land line and cell bill has a tax that is used to pay for those phones.

“Thanks to the FCC-mandated, government-sponsored program, called LifeLine Assistance, the financially disadvantaged can receive a free government cell phone and up to 250 free minutes every month.”

“An estimated 12.5 million other Americans already participate, and tens of millions more qualify to enroll. With the economy falling further and further behind, more and more Americans are finding themselves eligible for the Lifeline phone service program.”

That is a very professionally done web site. What they’ve got up now appears to be purposely typo/grammar-challenged, with a number of articles, such as ‘a’, missing from the text and with poor punctuation.

It even posts the entries as old blog posts.

One thing you can say about Axelrod’s team is that they are good at what they do.

There's a 70 year old guy who plays senior softball with us who doesn't have a pot to pee in. He's a vietnam vet receiving a small disability benefit as well as his social security. All totaled, he gets about $750 a month.

The only job he's ever had his entire life was that of a taxi driver. Until he just moved to Texas to stay with a niece, he was living in a motel room where he payed $640 a month rent.

This guy could probably qualify for every govt. program out there but we could never get him to do it. He definitely has mental problems, likely from his head injury in vietnam. Jimmy is the guy these programs were designed for but it's the other scum who are taking advantage of them....

If you read the above requirements, actually your Vietnam Vet friend would NOT qualify for the “free” Obama phone. That’s what’s so skewed about this “free” stuff the government offers. It all seems to be geared to those with children or those who are already getting some kind of assistance or the mentally impaired and/or addicted.

I have a friend who receives $850/mo social security and she still doesn’t qualify for food stamps, they told her she receives just $20 a month too much to qualify.

It’s all a huge scam.

Republican Congressman Tim Griffin (Arkansas) said he wants to end government issued cell phones to low-income and elderly individuals in an effort to stop rampant abuse of the program.

“Some people are getting two, three, four,10, 20, 30, 40 cell phones.” said Congressman Griffin.

He says a few years back the government extended the program to provide not just land lines, but cell phone service.

The congressman said the program is being abused and people are even selling the phones. “I have a four year old that goes to a school here in Little Rock. She came home with an advertisement for a free cell phone in her backpack.” said Congressman Griffin.

He says it is the Federal Universal Service Charge on your bill and goes into a fund regulated by the FCC.

“It started costing in the millions and now we’re close to a billion dollars a year.” said Congressman Griffin.

Uncle Sam’s Unlimited Plan: How the Government’s Cell Phone Giveaway Is Costing You Billions

http://griffin.house.gov/Lifeline

In 2008, the Lifeline Program was expanded to include wireless service providers. Between 2008 and 2009, non-landline costs for the program doubled – from $143 million to $384 million – and then doubled again, totaling over $719 million in 2010. Before the certification of the first wireless carrier, the overall Lifeline Program cost $822 million per year, an amount consistent with the previous five years. That number grew to $1.025 billion in 2009 and to $1.315 billion in 2010. According to the Federal Communications Commission, it is common for multiple wireless service providers to seek reimbursement for Lifeline services provided to the same household.
