It's Important To Understand Why Romney Won
Townhall ^ | October 9, 2012 | Dennis Prager

Understanding why Mitt Romney so decisively won the first presidential debate is as important as the fact that he did. Why? Because once we know the reasons, almost everything about President Barack Obama and this election becomes clear.

First, Obama lost because he, like virtually the entire left, lives in a left-wing bubble.

Left-wing academics live in this bubble. There is no greater uniformity of thought than at our universities; their much-ballyhooed commitment to diversity is about race and ethnicity, not about ideas.

So, too, the great majority of news media people live in the same bubble, the left-wing herd that covers national and international news. Reading The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times or Le Monde or listening to the BBC is essentially reading or listening to the same selection and presentation of the news.

One reason leftists talk to, read and listen to only fellow leftists is that they are certain that there is no other way to think rationally, compassionately or morally. Therefore, there is no reason to debate conservatives, let alone expose oneself to their ideas.

Obama is a man of the left. Leftism is his Weltanschauung, his value system, his way of understanding the world. Every one of the president's mentors whom we know about was a leftist, usually a radical leftist. The church he was married in and the pastor he adored were leftist. His work -- "community organizer" -- was left-wing work.

When you live in a bubble -- be it religious or political -- you cannot successfully debate opposing views. You're not even familiar with what those opposing views are. This debate was the first time in Obama's presidency -- if not his life -- that he had to defend the policies he believes in against an articulate conservative.

He couldn't.

The second reason for his defeat was that Obama lacked two things that have been essential to his popularity for the past four years.

One was a teleprompter. Most people would sound articulate if they could rely on teleprompters to speak words they and/or others wrote. But there were no teleprompters last Wednesday night.

Were a Republican president as dependent on a teleprompter as this president has been, the media constantly would report -- and mock -- the fact.

Which brings us to the news media's protection, the other thing the president was deprived of at the debate.

In the increasingly inglorious history of the mainstream (i.e., liberal) media, nothing has matched their four-year protection of this president. To cite but one of countless examples, when President George W. Bush signed the Patriot Act and incarcerated terror suspects at Guantanamo, the press was relentless in its attacks on him for allegedly undermining civil liberties. When Obama extended the Patriot Act and kept terror suspects in Guantanamo, the press was virtually silent.

A third reason for the Romney victory was the debate format. Moderator Jim Lehrer and new guidelines allowed the debaters to actually debate. The reason the liberal media have been so contemptuous of Lehrer is that, perhaps for the first time in the history of modern American presidential debates, the moderator did not attempt to dominate the proceedings. And what the left cannot control it fears.

According to Reuters, Obama spoke a full four minutes more than Romney did. But because Lehrer allowed Romney to actually respond to Obama, Romney didn't need any more time than he took.

Obama also lost because he is not intellectually deep. He is extremely bright. But he is not intellectually deep. If you read, rather than only listen to, any of his speeches -- from Berlin and Cairo until today -- you will discover how essentially empty they are. But because he never is challenged and because he delivers his largely nice-sounding vapidities so smoothly and authoritatively, many Americans are fooled.

He could not get away with this in the first debate. And though Obama surely will be much feistier and more aggressive in his second debate, if Romney is allowed to respond and challenge as he was in the first debate -- very possibly a big if -- there is no reason to believe that he will get away with his platitudes then, either.

Finally, Romney won because he understands how the economy works much better than Obama does -- and because he understands what America stands for much better than the president does.

The great unknown is whether enough Americans will come to realize all this by Election Day.

[[He also didn’t thank the Commission On Presidential Debates even after they agreed to a bench of liberal moderators,]]

That’s because he is the most ungrateful narcisist we’ve ever had as president- he feels a sense of entitlement- as though he’s owed everythjing- and htsoe who bend over backwards should kiss his feet for the privilege of doing so- He’s always, from even before day one as president, looked down his nose at folks- and even his wife has let her contempt for this coutnry slip a few times too-

Kimberly Gilfoil said “If obama is elected for another 4 years- what you will see is ‘obama unleashed’ and wow is she right- the left will know it’s thjeir last hurrah because of al lthe damage they have doen to it already- and they will soak this country for all it’s worth i nthe remaining term- Hell- obama himself even told the russian fella ‘just wait till i get reelected- right now I’m kinda restricted’ or soemthign to that effect

I won’t lsoe any sleep over it- I post to vent=- I coudln’t care less who reads whta I post to be honest0— If you care to comment on the content instead of fixcating on the delivery, then fine, I’ll discuss the content of said posts with you civily, if not, that’s fien too- but not sure why you feel you need to chime in? There is a reason why I keep typign hte same words wrong, there’s also a reason why /II don’t take the time to correct- if that’s not ok with tyou, well then oh well-
I just copy-pasted your paragraph back into the Free Republic "Your Reply" box and it underlined 10 words with a red, curvy underline. If I right-click on each of those, it gives me the option of correcting the error. In each case, it takes a fraction of a second.

I'm just curious.

Does the feature not work for you?

Is there a reason you don't want to use the feature?

Really, I'm not arguing, I'm just curious why you choose not to use this excellent feature... or what it is about your computer configuration that denies you the use of this feature. I'm just asking. Just curious.

Prove the second sentence is true, Dennis, using evidence other than his diplomas from some Northeastern schools that treat black Americans like Masai off the plains. "Look, he can speak English!"

When my college roommate applied to Harvard Medical School, they sent her materials addressed "Dear Third World Student." "They noticed you're from Houston!" I pointed out.

Yes, that's one reason.

The main reason is that leftism is a demonstrably failed ideology, which requires constant affirmation for its beliefs to be maintained by its adherents. Revisionist history is required, lies are required, self-delusional aids are required. Constantly.

Leftists MUST have their medicine from the MSM daily. Yes, it's like a drug.

Example: imagine having to hold simultaneously the belief that a murderer should not be put to death for justice, but a fetus can be killed with no more reason than convenience. Serious, constant affirmation is required to maintain sanity while holding these beliefs. The leftist media serves this purpose by helping their viewers maintain the delusion that these beliefs are not in conflict.

Though the main stream media serve leftist political ends, their most important function is providing the constant psychological salve that enables everyone to live the lie they must live.

Obama lost because Romney looked more presidential in every aspect of his personality, his intellect, and his approach to leadership.

It's really that simple. Obama has been in over his head for the last four years, and I think he knows it.

Reminded me of the time he left Clinton at the podium while he went on a dinner date with Michelle. Empty chair, empty suit, etc. The world is maybe, just maybe figuring out what we have known all along.

I have to carefully budget my strength and becausde I psot a lot and do so quickly, I make too many mistakes because of health issue and would take too long to go over evwery post I make- Yes, it’s not easy reading- but as I said, I psot more to just vent- not for folsk to read really- so it’s fien if you don’t wish to labor through my posts- I’;ll understand- I struggled through school- spent 13 years of hell there- that was long enough- I’m no longer under good grammar guidlines- my future does not depend on whether I spell weather or Whether right- My day doesn’t get ruiend if I mispell a word or two or several dozen- I know what I mean, and that’s all I care abotu really

Not tryign to be difficult or argumentative- it’s just UI’
m not goign to be labored down by constantly checkign my notoriously terrible spelling- I did that for 13 years when I wasn’t really physically strong enough to do so- but i did it anyways- and again, that’s lonmg enough

So, long story hsort- If peopel want ot think I simpyl became ‘lazy’ after school- well, whatever- they didn’t have top wear hte hsoes I did-

[[It’s really that simple. Obama has been in over his head for the last four years, and I think he knows it]]

Precisely, and America got it’s first good look at just how over his head obama really is- Democrats are shocked- shocked I say, when someoen doesn’t beleive the same way they dio, and they simply do not know how to respond to such a person as we amply witnessed in the last debate- Democrats are sued to barkign orders and havign NOONE question them on it, and when someoen actually stands up to them, trhey come unhinged, unglued, and discombobulated- we got a taste of it that evening-

The left can spin all they want, but hte fact is that obama is NOT the golden guy messiah they tried to make him out to be- and they are just shokced that that fact was exposed so thoroughly that evening
