MISSOULA, Mont. This funky college town, nestled along two rivers where five mountain ranges converge, has long been a liberal pocket, an isolated speck of blue in a deeply red state. Now Montana is electing more politicians who lean that way, thanks to a different-minded generation of young voters animated by the recession and social issues.
(snip) It is no secret that young voters tilt left on social issues like immigration and gay rights. But these students, and dozens of other young people interviewed here last week, give voice to a trend that is surprising pollsters and jangling the nerves of Republicans. On a central philosophical question of the day the size and scope of the federal government a clear majority of young people embraces President Obamas notion that it can be a constructive force, a point he intends to make in his State of the Union address on Tuesday.
Young people absolutely believe that theres a role for government, said Matt Singer, a founder of Forward Montana, a left-leaning though officially nonpartisan group that seeks to engage young people in politics. At the same time, this is not a generation of socialists. They are highly entrepreneurial, and know that some of what it takes to create an environment where they can do their own exciting, creative things is having basic systems that work.
Here in Montana, a state that backed John McCain in 2008 and Mr. Romney last year, voters under 30 have helped elect two Democratic senators and a new Democratic governor. Nationally, young voters have since 2004 been casting their ballots for Democrats by far wider margins than previous young generations a shift that could reshape American politics for decades.

And by 'left' they mean 'ignorant.'
“At the same time, this is not a generation of socialists. They are highly entrepreneurial, and know that some of what it takes to create an environment where they can do their own exciting, creative things is having basic systems that work.”
Entrepreneurial? What the hell is that, selling yarn crafts and homemade candles on Etsy?
“Exciting, creative things” means they are not creating the next fortune 500 company but pitching ideas on kickstarter or writing shotty apps while living in mom’s basement.
Ah, the new York slimes....
Looking for a light in every closet....

Was not this school described in “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance?”
Appropriately?
(Not you, Missoula STEM folks, we know you maintain standards.)
and then they graduate into the real world and are deeply shocked that it is nothing like they were told.
...so they move to the American Red (as removed from the Communist aka Democrat Red) States to make a living and thus bring with them their benighted ideology which infects the successful regions which prosper only because they reject the noxious notions of these maladroitly mentally molded Marxist minors..
Maybe the Founders understood something to specify 21-year-old males for the vote in the Constitution (at a time when life expectancy was what, 45?). I imagine you had a family well-started and were providing for others. You had “skin in the game”, and it made sense that your voice should count.
Modern society has extended adolescence what, well into the 30’s? Live with your parents. Use their insurance. Eat their food. Now they vote at 18. Talk about bass-ackwards.
Just more 20th century destruction of America by Progressives.
That’s the nature of youth, people tend to grow more conservative as they age. Because when you’re young you see a messed up world and want somebody to fix it, as you get older and see more and more attempts to fix it fail and cause more problems you learn they’re best avoided.
Yes, but something has changed. At 30 I was married, had two young children and was working at a bare minimum 60 hours per week. Thus any notions I may have picked-up on my college campus about singing Kumbaya in our Big Socialist Happyland had been melted away by reality.
Does not seem to be happening with this latest generation.
Well there’s the whole failure to launch crowd, they of course love big government, but most of them are too lazy to vote so I don’t worry about them.
mainstream media as a full supporting member of the regime +
uncontrolled illegal immigration =
BIG TROUBLE
>>> Does not seem to be happening with this latest generation.
Egggzzaakly.
?????
Not with current regime encouraging irresponsibility and rewarding such behavior left and right.
Daniel Greenfield wrote a great column about this a couple of weeks ago. The left-wingers don’t have very many children. They spend their money on trendy cars, trendy condos, trendy clothes and nice vacations. You spend your money raising the children who will later be indoctrinated by the left-wingers.
“Your kids are their kids.”
Greenfield’s solution? We emulate the most conservative religious groups in America, such as the Amish. They have their own education system and their own culture and entertainment, excluding the influences of the left. They have lots of children. A few leave the community, but most of those remain conservative anyway. And most of the kids stay.
I know quite a few young people serving our country overseas. All is not lost.
