Nationally syndicated talk-radio host Steve Deace, an Iowa native who has built a national brand as an in-house critic of the conservative movement, says Democrats are out-gunning Republicans on strategy and message.
“Say what you will, the Democrats offer solutions,” Deace said.
Meanwhile, the GOP issues statements that come across like sponsors’ patches on NASCAR drivers or scout badges, he said.
Deace, 40, spoke for about two hours to a crowd of 80 people at the Santa Maria Winery in Carroll last week, an event organized by the Carroll Area Tea Party.
His central theme: Republicans shouldn’t get mad with Democrats; they should learn from their opponents’ passion.
“We should not be upset,” Deace said. “We should be emulating them.”
Deace said President Barack Obama and Democrats have developed superior organizing tactics — and they don’t shrink from liberal instincts, as too many conservatives do with their own world views.
“The side that cares the least about losing always wins,” Deace said.
Deace unleashed a torrent of rhetorical fire on American culture’s celebrity obsession, saying it has corrupted politics and turn on its head the foundation of democracy: Public servants working for the people.
“Why do we rally around these people like they’re matinee idols on ‘Tiger Beat?’ ” Deace said.
He said Speaker of the U.S. House John Boehner, an Ohio Republican, is little more than a handmaiden for the Obama agenda. He joked that Boehner is likely to change his middle name to “Cave.”
“Congress is less popular than root canals and cockroaches,” Deace said.
Deace lives in West Des Moines, but his radio show has a national reach with affiliates in New York City, Washington, D.C., Seattle, Houston, Fresno, Calif., and dozens of other cities. His show airs on WHO-Radio.
“I’m not just a talk-show host; I’m an activist,” Deace said.
During his remarks, Deace drew some of the most sustained applause in complimenting the work of recently elected U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, a potential contender for the White House.
“One thing I’ve realized about Iowans is we value sincerity,” Deace said, terming Cruz a “force of nature” who is willing to challenge the system. Deace stopped short of endorsing Cruz but said he would like to see the Texan run because he can play offense with his principles.
In an interview, Deace said he plans to seek elected office himself someday (probably governor) but will not run as a Republican for the U.S. Senate in 2014.
“I took a long look at this race,” Deace said. “I know a lot of people in the conservative movement around the country that want to support a full-spectrum conservative for the nomination. They view this as a winnable seat.”
But Deace said, “In the end, I just didn’t get the sense that, frankly, it was something God was calling me to do. And it would probably mean I would have to give up my radio show just at a time when it is growing.”
What’s more, Deace said his show can help several candidates around the nation get elected.
Deace said he expects to the GOP Senate race to go to convention.
He doesn’t think a candidate can reach 35 percent in the primary.
Deace reserved some of his strongest comments in the interview for Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds, a Republican he described as a weakened elected official with no worldview or political future beyond her current position.
“Kim has a lot of issues that a lot of Iowa politicos are aware of, beyond simple worldview issues — a lot of stuff that would probably be exposed in a Senate race when this might be the 51st seat in the United States Senate,” Deace said. “I’m not in the business of dragging people through stuff publicly. It’s just stuff a lot of people know, stuff that would come out.”
When asked to elaborate or point out specifics, Deace said, “She has some issues, and I’ll just leave it at that.”
Funny he couldn’t say what the Dems’ “solutions” were.

So did Marx, Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Debbs, FDR, Castro, Mugabe, and Obama. There solutions were invariably worse than the problem.

This idiot is why we have to ride our ‘own’ talking heads harder than the libs. He is why people get scared and vote for Romney and the like.
He plants that seed and nurtures it till election day.
He certainly seems confident in his own Christianity when he claims that the Dems “offer solutions”.
He does have a national 'brand', because he is nationally syndicated. 3, 33, or 333 stations is syndicated. And he has been on CNN, MSNBC, etc. as a guest.
And to his point about the Democrats having 'solutions' to problems both real and manufactured..The Democrats do offer 'solutions'--more big, all-encompassing government garbage. He didn't say it was a good solution...
I really recommend his show. At first, when the local affiliate got rid of the previous talent, and I hear this guy, I said to myself: "WHO?" "Who the heck is this guy? Seriously?" But after hearing an hour I was hooked.
This guy is intelligent, a fierce debater, and has a tremendous future, especially if he runs for politics.
I urge you to take an honest look at Steve Deace. I have no dog in this fight; I am not related to him, if anyone is wondering. I do think he is very solid, entertaining radio, however.
So what do his counter-solutions to the Democrats’ “solutions” that he touts happen to be?
I wanna know what thinking person equates a guy that says dems offer solutions with someone possessing intelligence.
Words mean things.
They have solutions to nothing, these ideas solve nothing.
The phrase he used is enough for me to reject him out of hand as a kook.
“Solution” has a definition. It means something is solved. It means the problem is over.
Democrats never solve anything, it would defeat their cause of bigger government if a problem got solved.
Therefore, Democrats never have solutions.

I see some very good statements that he made. He admires Ted Cruz. He can’t stand the GOP Establishment. He thinks Boehner’s middle name should be “Cave”. He urged the tea party group he was speaking to, to offer conservative ideas, employing passion and good organizing skills which the GOP E is terrible at doing.
Unfortunately, his wording on “Democrats offer solutions” has seemed to overshadow these good statements. I’ve read the comments and most of them seem to focus there and interpret this guy as a GOP E shill at worst, at best, as a confused back bencher who has not the slightest clue what he’s talking about.
From all else he said, that was good and we would agree with, I take those three words in context to mean that they OFFER stuff that appears to solve people’s problems, not that it solves anything. In other words they are proactive, agressive, on offense. They out talk, out hustle, out organize and they don’t shy away from THEIR ideology but they are banging the drum on it every minute of every day.
It was on THAT point, the guy was saying our side - the conservative tea party side he was speaking to - should emulate the Democrats.
Here’s a clue what counter solutions he might have been talking about.
He was asked to speak to a Tea Party event and he did.
He was trying to rev up that Tea Party group to unabashedly do their thing like the Dems unabashedly do theirs.
Do you know what the Tea Party stands for?
If you do, then you know what kind of solutions he was talking to them about advancing - the cause of the Tea Party.
What has happened on this thread is his quote of three words - not a good word choice to reflect his speech them - is taken out of its context.
The other words that he said were good words. Pro pedal to the metal activism, no holes barred issue stands, Tea Party solutions, Ted Cruz as a role model, making fun of the GOP E and Boehner and their utter fecklessness, timidity, fear of conservative ideology, inability to communicate or organize their way out of a paper bag, etc.
It’s all in there, when you read the rest of what he said and know he spoke it to a Tea Party group.
To get hung up and miss the rest only happens when you rip three words out from the rest and pretend that that those three are all he said, and when you pretend not to notice he is a Tea Party advocate.
3 words can mean a lot. So can 1.
Like if he called conservatives “heartless” he can say goodbye to his audience. If he makes his living with words he should choose them more carefully.
