Trump third party run: 36% GOP supports, 19% of Democrats too (And 33% of Independents!)
The Washington Examiner's Washington Secrets ^ | August 3, 2015 | Paul Bedard

If Donald Trump gets bumped out of the Republican primaries and runs as an independent third party candidate, 36 percent of Republicans and a whopping 19 percent of likely Democratic voters would support him, according to a new poll.

Rasmussen Reports on Monday said that a Trump third party bid would complicate the presidential election even more than it did when H. Ross Perot ran in 1992, a bid that many believe cost former President George H.W. Bush a second term.

According to the poll:

• Over a third (36 percent) of likely GOP voters say they are likely to vote for Trump if he's a third-party candidate, with 18 percent who are :very likely" to do so.

• One-in-three voters who are not affiliated with either major party (33 percent) also are likely Trump voters, including 16 percent who say they are very likely to vote for him if he runs third-party.

• Even 19 percent of Democrats describe themselves as likely Trump voters, although that includes just nine percent (9 percent) who say they are very likely to vote that way.

Other recent polls found that a Trump independent run would cost the Republican nominee and all but guarantee a Democratic victory.

Uh, doesn't that mean he'd almost certainly beat both John Ellis and Hillary in the general election?

I’d prefer he didn’t do this, but if the GOP nominates Jebhole Bush, then I say go ahead.

Oh my! What I love most is that the GOP establishment is crapping their pants and it has been a long time coming...

They’ve bought their candidate for so long that they have begun to think that it is the natural order of things. Past time to show them that the voters (you know those that are working real jobs in the real world) don’t actually like them at all!

Money buys all in politics it seems except when those running don’t need any - ha, this is going to be a very good race! Go Trump!!

Bush I beat himself. Read my lips. I was actually gonna vote for him until he looked at his watch in the debate. If he didn’t have the time to tell me why I should have then I didn’t.

If its Jeb v Hillary I would totally support a third party run by trump or cruz. Jeb and hill are two peas in a pod. Same goes for Jeb v any dem.

Little Jebbie needs to just go away.

Read those numbers again, and assume they’ll increase. How does she win?

“Uh, doesn’t that mean he’d almost certainly beat both John Ellis and Hillary in the general election?”

It certainly means that he has a shot at winning a 3-way race. For Republicans as a whole, it is MUCH BETTER if Trump runs as Third Party, then having a repeat of a McCain type candidate that loses anyway.

...and the big difference is that the majority of Trump voters will vote Republican down-ballot. But if Trump isn’t there, people like me (and probably most of this site) will certainly sit home - and we’ll watch Nancy and Harry take power again, just as they did in 2009 when the base sat out the election.

Don’t get too wound up by a poll that reflects momentary excitement for a 3rd party run. Democrats will return to their beloved party before election day as will most Repubs.

A Trump 3rd party run guarantees a landslide win by Hillary.

What would make it more complicated is that Bernie Sanders is likely to also enter in as a third party candidate for the Green party if Hillary gets the nomination. Trump, Bush, Hillary, Sanders all vying for votes. In that case, the national parties would focus on Senate races and treat this as an over-glorified midterm.

At least the GOP Congress under Clinton functioned as a reasonably effective conservative body. I can’t recall anything else since Reagan that would qualify as a branch of the government promoting a conservative agenda.

While I would prefer Cruz over Trump, and perhaps a couple of others, I’d prefer Trump over most of the rest of the field, and I can’t see most of them slowing anything down on the highway to the cliff.

Ah, you worry about a Hilary Clinton presidency? Just how much worse would that be with what we have now? How much worse would that be if Jeb was president?

I suggest that it matters little at this point because both parties and all participants would do almost the same so really no difference!

Now, Trump just might change things... Who are you to discourage the changing of the guard?

Just imagine a Country with a President that had no monetary motives and no political motives? Geez, would that not make major changes in policy?

I’m still trying to digest all of the changes possible...

Yes, of course Trump would (will) easily beat Bush and Clinton together.

Most people here have a very distorted view of the average, normal Democrat voter. Because of this, most here don't consider candidates and strategies which can grab a fraction of those voters.

This is the key to Trumpismo.

How many million men died and how many million more were crippled, maimed and scarred for life to give you the right to vote?

Jeb is running to make Hillary President - he’s running to lose, just like McCain did.

If Trump takes the GOP, he’ll beat Hillary in landslide.

If Trump runs 3rd Party, he’d need ALL the non-voters plus what he could pull away from the GOP plus whatever he could scrape up from fiscal Democrats.

And if he didn’t do all that, Jeb would throw it for Hillary.

And then America would die.

The term “Reagan Democrat” was coined for a reason, as was the “silent majority” and several others.
