Dallas Co. GOP Chair: Elector Changed Mind About Voting For Trump

Dallas County Republican Party Chairman Phillip Huffines criticized a North Texas elector who made national headlines after saying he won’t for Donald Trump for president.

Christopher Suprun, a Republican from Cedar Hill, will join other Texas Republicans who were chosen as electors, at the state Capitol in Austin Monday afternoon.

Huffines said he was frustrated, disappointed and angry when he heard Suprun announced in a New York Times Op-Ed earlier this month, that he would vote for another Republican, not the president-elect.

Huffines said he’s surprised because Suprun promised him in an email dated November 14, that he would vote for Trump.

Surprun’s email read in part, “I have no intention of denying the President-elect his victory. To the contrary, I have argued that while he and I have major policy disagreements, I will not Bork him as many Democrats would like.”

He was referring to Robert Bork, President Reagan’s nominee for Supreme Court Justice who Democrats rejected.

In an interview Friday, Huffines said, “For an individual to sign a pledge and then change his mind in some way well, in Texas, a man’s word is his bond. So it doesn’t sit well.”

On Friday afternoon, Suprun acknowledged the email he sent Huffines.

He told CBS11 there’s a reason he changed his mind. “The continuing realization Mr. Trump was not changing, wasn’t becoming more presidential and again he was attacking people with non-facts.”

In Texas, the electors are not legally bound even after making their pledge. They can change their minds.

Suprun said he tried to meet with Huffines before announcing his decision. “He never had time to meet with me, so eventually, I had to go on and make the decision without conversing with him first.”

Huffines said, “I didn’t know he was ever thinking of not voting for the president. But we didn’t have a lot of communication. I made several phone calls into this individual after the controversy occurred.”

When asked if he ever heard back from Suprun, Huffines replied, “No.”

Texas Republican party leaders expect Suprun will be the only one of 38 Texas Republican electors who won’t vote for President-elect Trump.

Huffines said he believes Suprun won’t have any negative impact on the outcome.

I looked into the Texas statutes on Electors and removal/replacement.

The Electors can, in their meeting, by majority vote, remove/replace an Elector if he is absent or “ineligible”.

I then looked into eligibility to serve on a party’s slate of Electors. He qualifies on all.

However.

One requirement is that an Elector be “affiliated with the party.” It seems to be the party can officially remove him from its registration roster, present the relevant documents to the Electors and have him declared ineligible.

The Electors can then remove him. A qualified replacement can be waiting outside the door and the majority can select that person as replacement.

This CAN be done. The affiliation criterion looks like the obvious way to proceed — unless the GOP in Texas has no procedure defined for removing someone from the registration rolls involuntarily.

I thought I read that he had decided to resign and they were going to appoint someone else? Maybe it was a different guy. At any rate, there should be rules for removing such a jerk, and replacing him with someone else.

So true. The fomenters continuously chip away at sound structures and we corporately entertain it with patience and goodwill. The idea that electors are somehow up for grabs once the votes have been cast must STOP.

Be a shame if he got lost on the way to Dallas. I hear traffic is a mess that time of day too.

Wish I know someone with the Texas State Patrol. This guy looks like a boozer. Bet he even drives knocked to his knees.

I wonder what the life expectancy is for traitors in Texas these days...

A week? A month?

This clown should probably have a fast car, a passport, funds for a good plastic surgeon, and a country far away from the USA if he expects to survive. Just sayin’. Everyone knows how Karma is and how hard it can hit sometimes and in the strangest of ways.

A man is only as good as his word and since this guy has basically said his word is no good; he no longer has a place to fit in in Texas. Well, there’s always Austin and Houston, but not in God’s country where the normal people live and I’m not even a Texan. This is more a simple right and wrong issue than anything else. He really should leave the country even if he changes his mind again before Monday.

It’s about 6 seats below 2/3, which allows fifteen or so liberal Republicans to join Democrats to name the Speaker.

What will you say if President Trump nominates him for the Supreme Court?

I don’t think that will ever happen. Just like Romney would never be SOS.

But if he does, I’ll let you know.

Follow the money. He was going bankrupt. He’s been bought off (probably by Soros) and his bill’s will be taken care of. This guy struck the jackpot and gets his 15 minutes of fame to boot. All he had to do was sell his soul to the devil.
