Virginia Gov 2017: Poll shows Gillespie [GOP], Northam [Dem] tied in race for governor
Richmond Times-Dispatch ^ | 7/24/17 | PATRICK WILSON

A new poll shows Republican Ed Gillespie and Democrat Ralph S. Northam tied in the November race for governor, a significant improvement for Gillespie over a poll last month showing him trailing Northam by 8 points.

They each have support from 44 percent of Virginia voters, with Libertarian Cliff Hyra at 3 percent and another 9 percent undecided, according to a Monmouth University poll released Monday. A Quinnipiac University poll in June had Northam up by 8.

Monmouth University's Polling Institute also found that low approval ratings for President Donald Trump may be hurting Gillespie, because if Trump were not a factor some Northam voters would swing to undecided.

"A small but crucial portion of Northam's support is coming from voters who are primarily anti-Trump," Patrick Murray, director of the polling institute, said in a press release. "Unless one of the candidates breaks out with a clear advantage on Virginia-centric issues, the president could wind up as a decisive factor in the outcome."

Voters said health care was the top issue they wanted Northam and Gillespie to address.

Republicans were elated by the poll and said it countered the idea that the GOP had not rallied around Gillespie after he narrowly lost a June primary to Corey Stewart, who ridiculed him during their campaign.

“Compared to his 2014 performance, Gillespie is currently holding similar leads in both central and western Virginia. Northam’s lead in northern Virginia, on the other hand, lags the current incumbent’s margin there from 2013. These dynamics are serving to keep the 2017 race neck and neck right now,” said Murray.

Other demographic differences in gubernatorial vote intent include:

Women: 50% Northam, 37% Gillespie; Men: 51% Gillespie, 37% Northam.

White non-Hispanic voters: 52% Gillespie, 36% Northam;

Other race/Hispanic: 69% Northam, 18% Gillespie.

Age 18-49: 50% Northam, 39% Gillespie; Age 50-64: 46%

Gillespie, 38% Northam: Age 65+: 47% Gillespie, 43% Northam.

College graduate: 47% Northam, 42% Gillespie; No degree:
47% Gillespie, 38% Northam.

The Monmouth University Poll was conducted by telephone from July 20 to 23, 2017 with 502 Virginia residents likely to vote in the 2017 gubernatorial election. The results in this release have a margin of error of +/- 4.4 percent. The poll was conducted by the Monmouth University Polling Institute in West Long Branch, NJ.

Should we care? Gillespie is accomplished. Guess that means we should get behind him. Just don’t ask for money.

I think fundraising is going well for him. I probably won’t donate $$ either — just time and energy to get the word out. I believe it helps our President enact his agenda when Republicans win.

Trump is speaking live now to the Boy Scout Jamboree! He said 10 members of his cabinet are former Scouts!

Gillespie is accomplished.

Really?
What has he accomplished other than being the RNC Chair for the Cheap Labor Express?
Electing Republicans who are opposed to upholding the rule of law does not help anyone.

FALSE ATTACK: ED GILLESPIE IS A 30-YEAR CAREER LOBBYIST

FACTS: Ed’s long and successful career started as a Senate Parking lot attendant. He spent over 16 years working for Congress, the White House or the Republican National Committee. For the last 10 years, he’s run his own communications strategy firm in Alexandria, Virginia. Seven years of a 33-year career were at a government affairs firm, the last year being 2007.

At one time in my life I would have agreed. Not anymore, the current Republican congress are the poster children of incompetent and cowardice. We don’t have a choice anymore.

Not always. RINOs inflict more damage than regular Democrats. They enact the Democrat agenda while causing maximum casualties to the GOP. The Democrats reap all the rewards at the next election.

Someone tell his campaign manager that Ed needs a physical makeover (new hairdo, posture, clothes and facial expression). Remember Richard Nixon and the TV fiasco. First impressions are lasting impressions!!!!! Go Gillespie!

VA is gone. Gillespie will lose if turnout from NoVa is anywhere close to normal. And many conservatives will not turn out for Gillespie who barely won the nomination over Corey Stewart. Gillespie is the very definition of a RINO. He is lousy on immigration.

I didn’t say he wasn’t accomplished. . .I just thought a “new look” (not drastic) was in order. Many voters will not take the time to actually listen to the dialogue.

Maybe so. It’s July. In my view, it’s too early to surrender and not even fight for Richmond.

Listen to a Gillespie speech on immigration (I did.) He sounds like Corey Stewart. Calling him RINO is just as suicidal as Bill Bolling’s selfish and childish tantrum in 2013. That bastard helped toss the Virginia election to Terry McA. Don’t be like Bastard Bill Bolling!

“Rich lobbyist”

Post #8 from his website says he’s never been a lobbyist. I supported someone else in the Primary. Now it’s time to rally and defeat the dems. Democrats are destructive.

That’s right...it will make absolutely no difference whether a Republican or ‘RAT governor is presiding over the 2020 Census redistricting in Virginia. Ask the ‘RATS if the outcome would differ between the two.

Brilliant thinking!
