Meds would have begun post op. Apparently the surgery wasn't successful and the use continued rather than additional surgery. Not knowing how these were prescribed it's not possible to say how the addiction occurred. The meds are time released over a 12 hour period and scripts written as such. Time abuse creates addiction which amounts to what is in reality a physical addiction. Attempts to break it result in symptoms such as vomiting or diarrhea, most people are unsuccessful. Demands increase and the addiction eventually requires more.

Many people overcome insurmountable if they truly aspire. I believe Rush is one of those people.

Phew.........I can't imagine that suffering. So did the surgery end the pain?

This information comes from a pro-drug site.

I know that, the site was specifically chosen for that reason. The same people who archived this tidbit of Rush's are very much among those who are among the most vociferous calling for him to serve prison time today.

I find it interesting that they call on his '95 and earlier statements here on FR to rail against Rush, yet avoid making reference to his '98 statements that they use in support of their own positions on their websites.

Big difference in getting addicted as the result of pain medication following an unsucessful surgery and using coke/crystal to pack your nose to get high.

Not really.
Taking drugs to feel better vs. taking drugs to feel better.

I'm still having a tough time with the logic in some of these statements that defend or prosecute Rush.

Is Rush still in pain?

If he kicks the habit, what will he do about the pain?

If I am in constant pain and I am prescribed medication to ease the pain, and I take it as prescribed, how does that make me an addict?

It would seem that the addiction comes into play when I take MORE than what's been prescribed, or, the pain is gone but I still take the pills.

How would I be able to get MORE drugs than what has been prescribed?

A doctor could over-prescribe medication.
I could go to many doctors and get separate prescriptions.
I could also buy pills on the street.

Usually, rehab requires abstinence of all chemical substances.
They may temporarily prescribe other drugs(Valium etc...)to ease the pain of withdrawal.

If Rush is free of pain, abstinence can be done.
If Rush is still in pain, abstinence really isin't an option.

As for addiction, it seems hypocritical to categorize addictions as goOd and bad-(packing coke or overuse of prescribed drugs) - once addicted, it no longer matters why or how, it's only the addiction that matters.

The poster of Rush's statements seemed to be of the opinion that they were NOT sarcasm -

The "quotes" are from a poster at a pro-drug website.

That same TV show predicted as much.... They highlighted how a ton of kids in some small rural community were hooked and how it was destroying so many lives. And this was at least a couple of years ago!

Sure, there is a difference. But either kind of addiction lays you low, affecting you morally, physically, and spiritually.

It is all to easy to become addicted: someone who takes an occasional drink can become an alcoholic. In other words, it doesn't take a moral lapse to become an addict.

I don't see a moral superiority of someone who becomes addicted to pain medication over any other kind of addict. I only see people in desperate need of addiction recovery.

But rarely do you find people who buy coke/crack/heroin to help their backpain....or any pain for that matter. Most who do drugs and get hooked originally did it for the fun of it, thinking it was no big deal -- that they could easily quit.

I thought he was taking oxymoron?

Legalizing abortion solved the problem of that being a crime... didn't it ?

LOL, abortion is murder, pure and simple.

Abortion can never be made lawful even though it might be allowed through legislative & judicial fiat in not punishing it.

The same can not be said of the use of substances for the relief of pain and suffering.

"I don't know, Howlin. But Roy Black says this started in 1997."

I love these lawyers statements -

"One thing I can tell you is that Rush Limbaugh has been in pain for many years...."

Sure he can tell us that, and we all know that the only thing that he knows is what his client tells him - So ?

LOL. For some reason I doubt their ability to grasp the subtle nuances of Rush's show.

Speaking of constant pain:

Here are Kurt Cobain's comments regarding a stomach condition and his drug use:

http://www.q.co.za/2001/2002/10/24-kurtcobain.html

"I am not a junkie ... Ive had a rather unconclusive and uncomfortable stomach condition for the past three years ... I decided to relieve my pain with small doses of heroine (sic) for a walloping 3 whole weeks."

" ... I decided to use heroine on a daily basis because of an ongoing stomach ailment that I had been suffering from for the past five years and had literally taken me to the point of wanting to kill myself."

"It was a stupid thing to do and Ill never do it again and I feel real sorry for anyone who thinks they can use heroine as a medicine because um, duh, it don't work."

"I remember someone saying if you try heroine once you'll become hooked. Of course I laughed and scoffed at the idea but I know believe this to be very true."

Rush's take on Kurt Cobain:

"Kurt Cobain was, ladies and gentlemen, a worthless shred of human debris"

I'm not seeing the distinction here between Kurt Cobain's illegal use of heroin to self-medicate and Rush's illegal uses of oxycontin "synthetic heroin" to self-medicate. Yet Rush felt strong enough to condemn Cobain for his drug use with the comment above. Wonder if he'd make the same sort of comment now.

It was Dan's Bake Sale.

You're a real listener, all right.

Unfortunately for Rush's prognosis, "forced rehab" is an oxymoron.

I disagree. Getting on the road to recovery is quite possible regardless of how you get to rehab.

When you are on the pain pills you have no pain. I have herniated discs in lower back and neck and was on hydrocodone for awhile. There was no pain at all!!! Hadn't felt that good in 15 years. But I felt like the walking dead and knew I was on some wild stuff so got off of it a little at a time and just try to live with it. The bad thing though on the pills is since you feel no pain you may not know that you are doing more damage to your back from lifting, bending etc.

>>Even in constant pain, even under the influence of painkillers, suffering from hearing loss, El Rushbo annihilated the libs. Just think what he can do when he gets back!!!<<

I've been thinking exactly the same thing! In fact, I'd been amazed at how Rush usually kept his cool, rarely lost his temper with some really nasty callers.... Now I know he was medicated. So now when he comes back he should really let the fur fly when he's stone cold sober.

That will be fun to hear!
