Here Come's The Sun
Space Weather News ^ | Nov. 2, 2003 | Space Weather News

Posted on 11/02/2003 5:58:12 PM PST by Barnacle

Another remarkable solar flare has erupted from giant sunspot 486--an X8-class blast at 1725 UT on Nov. 2nd. Because the sunspot is nearing the sun's western limb, this explosion was not aimed squarely at Earth. Even so, a coronal mass ejection (CME) is heading our way. Auroras could appear on Nov. 3rd or 4th when the fast-moving cloud delivers a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field. Visit spaceweather.com for more information and images.

Here's some hope for those of us who were clouded over for the last aurora.

Another X-3 flare was just recorded. Looks like a busy week for the space weather folks (again).

Ping

Sunspot 486 does it again. Standing by with fingers and toes crossed for this one.

Please put me on your ping list. Thanks. Here's the x ray flux. For some reason every once in a while you have to hit refresh on this site. 4 X class flare in such a short time. Very interesting...http://www.sec.noaa.gov/rt_plots/xray_5m.html

I agree with that. Last week Wednesday was clear all day- hoped to have a good view of the northern lights- then clouded over just as the sun was setting. Damn Michigan weather. Now they're predicting rain all week. Probably won't see them again this time either.

This has been a BOON to the higher frequency amateur bands (like 10 and 6 Meters) -

- I had several friends work Hawaii on Six Meters (50 MHz) which would not have been possible without these last solar events!

Last night Art Bell claimed that the strong sun flare decreases the earth's magnetic field, weakens it momentarily and substantially. Is he hallucinating?

Art Bell described the squashing of the mag field as like squeezing a sponge, but he went on to say that if a series of strong flares hit, the natural protection of the earth by its mag field might be so diminished that the later flare could reach the ground and cause mass extinction. He says perfectly behaved stars such as the sun can do this.

Yeah, Art 'Y2K' Bell, AKA Hale-Bopp Bell
