Is anyone else getting a "Don't be Late" E-mail (vanity)?
self

Posted on 11/03/2003 3:25:57 PM PST by calvin sun

The body of the note says, "Will meet tonight as we agreed, because on Wednesday I don't think I'll make it,

so don't be late. And yes, by the way here is the file you asked for. It's all written there. See you.

blkbsxos"

Attached to the note is a file "readnow.zip"

I have the latest Symantec definitions, but the note still got through. Is this file a virus, or a hoax?

Mine said "I'll be the one in the grey fedora with a pink carnation in their lapel." the file was mickeyspillane.exe. When I opened it it beat me up.

If you're aware enough to ask the question, you already know the answer...

Yes, it is a virus. This virus was going around campus here, albeit with a rather different message, but it seems to be the same thing. More information can be found here:

This one is mimail.e. Pretty much the same payload, except the DoS component is targeted at anti-spam sites.

And if you're crazy enough to open any of these emails - you surely deserve the consequences!

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE

And NEVER open an email with an attachment unless you KNOW who and what it is. I would not open anything that starts with " re: " or viagra or sex or Big-uns or whatever.

Hmmm, so this was a virus written by someone who likes to send me spam.

I guess that narrows the list of possible culprits down to about a million or so.

Well, it is probably a virus. But opening a .zip file will not excecute anthing. So you can atleast double click on the attachement. But if there are any .exe's or .bat's or any other type of executable file, I would not click on it. If there are docment files like .txt, .doc, rtf, etc. they are safe to open.

You would probably be better off just deleting the whole thing though.

Since you are a time traveller,
then you should be able to safely open the attachement,
then, if something bad happens,
you can go back in time and undo the error.

Well, it is probably a virus. But opening a .zip file will not excecute anything. So you can atleast double click on the attachement to see what is inside. However, be very careful at this point to not double click on any executables. In fact, don't click on anything that is not a document like extension. Such as .txt, .doc. .rtf, or .pdf. There are many others but you are probably better off just to DELETE the whole damn thing

Don't EVER, EVER open an attachment when you don't know the sender. Didn't you learn ANYTHING in kindergarten?

If you show up wearing chaps a ruffled tuxedo shirt, you'll be okay. Forget to wear either one and you're in serious, serious trouble.

Good advice to not open something from someone you don't know... but viruses... by design, will probably come from someone you ~do~ know... Someone who has you in their address book :~D
